Foam bed for my bike

I was looking to buy an estate which would make it easier to transport my bike but time constraints forced my hand an I've bought an older Saab 95 saloon. Huge boot and seats that fold down flat.

Has anyone got a large booted car in which they've laid a deep foam layer with a ballpark bike shape cut into the foam?

I reckon I can lay the bike into the cutout shape and it should protect both the bike (priority) and the car?

That just sounds weird. Why not just take off the front wheel and have the bike in the back upright? With straps off to the side and harnessed on the sides of the car, the bike(s) shouldn't move.

It would take up a lot of space for no benefit I can see. Preventing a bike moving around isn't hard, however you pack it. I put my bike in the boot of my old Merc coupé (no folding seats), with the wheels off, and a long piece of underlay folded around and between everything. It takes two bikes and a couple of soft bags easily. You might consider doing this, partly because it leave the bike completely invisible to naughty prowlers.

Why not just have some sort of bike bag ? Either one you buy ready made (PBK do one that covers the lower (more dirty) half) or make one from a couple of sheets or similar ?

PBK Bike Bag, looks OK anyone got experience of one of these or similar?

Ideally I want a soft case/bag and want to spend less that £100
  • My '92 Toyota can fit two bikes in the back (on their side) with the rear seat dropped down. I use the boot cover (thing that rises with the boot when opening) inbetween the bikes as a protection layer.

I intend to get a Thule bike rack of some sort, probably a toe bar mounted type, when I'm not struggling to cover the day-to-day bills, hopefully in May (been spending too much recently on bike bits, pc games and pressies recently)!
