Not sure what's worse, openly carrying guns or carrying hidden chibs.

just saw it on the news, why the president of the right to arm brigade needs a gun is beyond me, he was huge.
  • Yes, it's a daft saying of the NRA, but guns don't kill people, people kill people. To be more specific, there are far more guns per head in Switzerland than there are in the US yet there is far more gun crime in the US. So actually the saying should be "Guns don't kill people, Americans kill people".

Our tough gun laws must be the envy of the world, restricting their use to teenage drug dealers.

And are therefore too dangerous to be trusted with a gun.

I'm sure that when the Americans are picking the bodies of massacred teenagers off the school floor they might envy us slightly.

I've seen a graph somewhere showing that Switzerland has an exceptionally high rate of gun deaths so there is a direct correlation between having guns around the house and getting killed by one.

Obviously people do the killing but if they don't have guns in the first place they don't use 'em to kill 'em.

    Update, I found it

Err, that graph shows that gun deaths are generally proportional to ownership in most countries, including Switzerland.

The exception, by a massive margin, is the US.

Edit: What's with the Belgians? Never had them down as crazy shooty types.

A few months ago the news ran a story here about a mans' dog that somehow managed to shoot his owner with his own rifle. Perfect. The NRA will probably argue that the dog should have been trained in gun safety.

This is too dodgy. There have been moments when I have been so angry that if I had a gun I'd have probably used it and then gone, Oh shite. Glad we don't have this capacity in this country.

This trend of gun carrying is too stupid for words, then again it is in the land of the free......

I think that's exactly what I said. If you have guns around people get killed with them. I can't think of a better reason not to have them around.

To clarify as well - the Swiss situation is slightly different as their army is primarily a militia, and militia personnel are required by law to keep their military issued weapon(s) at home, this skews the figures somewhat.

Gun ownership in Turkey is huge as well - estimated at 8 million. Given the Turkish temperament this is not particularly healthy, although at least all men are required to serve in the military and have been given some firearms training.

I'll never understand the yanks attitude, but the NRA are so powerful that the situation is unlikely to change.

So only teenage drug dealers are allowed to carry guns? Wow, I thought the law applied to them too.

I have to be walked from the start of the Police cordon to my House at least twice a Year due to teenagers and their penchant toward "bussing shot after Man". The last time it happened I suggested to the Policeman that they send them on a course on how to shoot properly, if they hit each other a bit more often then after a while they will all be dead and the rest of the neighbourhood and the Police could get some peace. I just turn the TV up when it happens now :D

Apparently it is a bit - I think it was on Stephen Frys US trip that I saw something about how gun ownership is on the decline as a result of which the gun manufacturers are getting a bit desperate - eg manufacturing guns specifically designed to appeal to children/girls etc.

    Can only live in hope.......
Incidentally, the plot of deaths against gun ownership would be interesting if subdivided according to state. Should be very easy to see which states have low gun ownership.

Any chance of mixing in Knife and Chib deaths as well?
Wondering if the availability of Guns makes a difference to the number killed by knifes.
