Hi guys

I'm entering the SXC (Scottish XC race series) at Kirroughtree next week...thought I'd give the open class a go as my son is entering the under 14s.

Can anyone give me recommendations on what tyres would be good to buy for such an event. Nothing stupidly expensive say in the £20-£30 bracket

What would you recommend for lightness, grip and speed

It would be good to get the thoughts of you more experienced guys out there.I basically don't pay much attention to my tyres until they wear out and need replacing then usually buy whatever is cheap and cheerful. Currently running Specialized Pro which are OK but not the grippiest I found

I understand that folding tyres are lighter so should I restrict the search to this category?

Cheers

Syncros FL 2.0 steel bead. £15 at Stif. 600 grams but incredibly quick and puncture proof. it's a great all rounder too that sheds mud well.

Nobby Nics are great all-rounders and Merlinhave the 2.1s for £25 each. They are very light (500g) but can be a bit fragile if you are heavy/clumsy or ride on rocky terrain and they don't last very long. Apart from this they are outstandingly light/fast/grippy.

The 2.25s are only slightly heavier but far more robust for an extra £4.

As usual guys great information and advice
a question on Durometer what is it?
I see some of teh Maxxis come in 62a or 70 can anyone explain this to me.

Nobby Nics sound the business and teamed with Ralphs may be quite an interesting mix

Will check out prices online and make a call soon for next week

@peter are the Maxxis the same tyres used on GT Konas?

The Durometer is a measurement of hardness of the rubber.

40a usually the softest, 70a usually the hardest.

Softer rubber gives more traction, harder longer life and less rolling resistance.

Nobby Nics are triple compound, so softer on the outer lugs harder on the centre and carcass another compound.

Yes the Ignitors are used on Kona Caldera's. The High Rollers are used on some other Kona's.

    Not sure about GT's though
