DIY haircuts

For me, going to the barbers is about as appealing as root canal work, so I generally wait until I look like Bill Bailey then have a grade 1 all over.

mrs.blitz has made some noises about cutting my hair for me and I wondered what would be the best clippers to use?

My OH used to cut my hair when it used to be long at Uni and during my last job :D , but not I have a crew cut I have to go to the barbers :( It is definatly easier to get a DIY job on long hair, have you considered that fancy round doohicky from the telly for doing all over grades?

    some good ones.

i got some panasonic ones years ago that still work fine but could cut a bit better so it takes quite a few runs over the head to make sure it is all the same length.

switchable/adjustable guides are a must though.

I have been thinking about some more robust ones recently though.

  • I've got a set of these.

    They do the job nicely.

Easy enough to even do it yourself, although you'd best let her check it over for you unless you want odd tufts at the back.

I do my own hair, grade 2 on the sides, with 5 on top. Used to just grade 2 my hair all over, but fancied a change. Bit of wax, and it looks like a hairdresser did it.

My clippers were £20 from argos about 4 years ago, and are spot on. They came with grades 1-9 or something too.

I've got some Babyliss ones that I use every month or so. Couldn't tell you what type they are, but it cost about £40 from Tesco, and judging by the number of times I've used it, it's definitely paid for itself.
CWNT, it's always good to have someone check you over, I have to have 2 mirrors though so that I can see what i've done at the back of my head

Number 3 all over usually, maybe in the summer I do No.2 on sides and back and 3 on top (as I'm balding, I may as well keep the hair a bit longer up top ;) )
It takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded.

Im gowing mine back. I normally have a 2 on top / 1 round the sides. Im losing my hair a bit, but nothing 'major' but in about 4 years the front of my hair will have officially broken away from the mainland and declared itself an island. Then it shall be short hair forever.

But it's still OK, ie I can style it, use someproducts and it's not noticeable that Im slowly thinning up front...

Anyway... FTW... WAHL clippers (the best you can afford) the thing is all you really need is grades 1-4. Not the whole set that costs £50 with a leather case, grades 1-12, hairbrush etc etc etc

I've been cutting my own hair for about 6/7 years now, hate visits to the hairdressers, and find they usually end up taking too much off or attempt a boyband hairstyle..

Usually a grade 3/4 on the side, and between 6-8 on top, depending on how I'm feeling. Have a little tidy up of the face fuzz at the same time, then use the clippers without a grader to do the neckline.. stating the obvious, but use 2 mirrors (one handheld), you can see where you're cutting then!

    Oh, and Wahl FTW... :D

The missus does mine...worth spending money on good clippers..started with some £15 ones which were shoot...also if you have a bit of length (rather than just a grade 1or 2all over) get a decent pair of scissors for doing around the ears and finally I find a decent beard trimmer is best for doing the around the neck at the back.

    +potato for wahl.

i bought a set about 4 years ago, they were 30 quid and i reckon i could chop a hedgerow down with them.

i make my mrs cut my hair atleast onc amonth, normally every 3 weeks or so and i have a 4 round the sides and 8 on the top, she blends it in and it looks fine.
the clippers have probably saved me about 500 quid in that time but the main reason i got them was because i hate going to the barbers.

Mrs Matt cuts mine - got clippers and job done - she does it pretty well.

Had a "proper" haircut (Tony and Guy - snigger) to see if they did it differently - they didn't. So back to grade 1/2/3/4 with my cheapo clippers again!

I prefer Stihl. I think the smell of two stroke goes nicely with Dax Red Wax.

    Mains FTW.......

Unless you're panning on cutting your hair on Dartmoor
  • I have something like this

    http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/p ... RIMMER.htm

It only cost me £15 though, last year.

I've cut it about 5/6 times in that period, saved about £42 on hair cuts.

I just put on the longest (grade 8 I think) attachment and do my whole head (takes ages though, keep missing bits).

Then a 6 at the sides, and carefully trim around my ears.

Then set up my video camera with my laptop and tidy up the back.

    Takes about 30/45 minutes.

  • No, it involves 2 burly men a wrench and some herbal tea.
