training books

my fitness has been pritty much the same for years, pritty average, and im ready to take it up a bit, after reading a copy of one of my friends training book for rugby it got me thinking is there something similar mtb orientated? the rugby book had a recommended plan and training scedule as well as stretches and gym exercises associated with the sport, if the book had something on nutrition that would be better, iv seen the john metcalfe book but just wondered if anyone has read one and which do people prefer?
