New or Old

I'm pondering about a bike for riding an up-to-20-mile loop from my house. I have my trusty C2W Rockhopper Disc for trails and XC. My problem is that to get to my nearest decent off-road ride at Llandegla takes the best part of an hour each way, by the time I've hung my bike carrier, then loaded up, then driven there. Then there's the parking fee of £3.50. (please don't get me wrong, I don't mind at all paying the parking. It's cheap for the amount of fun I can have there)

I need a ride from my back door for when I've only got a couple of hours, to try to build up my stamina for the real thing. The 20 mile loop mentioned above, is mostly road but has around 4 miles along the "Bishop Bennets" bridleway. There are no steep hills or technical bits. Frankly, it's boring, but it's all I've got. I'm thinking I don't need suspension, or disc brakes, but do need an easy rolling tyre that'll still grip in a little mud.

I'd like a bike to do this loop. Do I buy an old mountain bike from the early days before they became all-singing all-dancing. Or should I spend the same amount on a cheap new bike. Would the spec on an old eg Speciallized/Marin,/Giant/etc be better than a new Apollo XC from Halfords/CRC/Evans, or the like.

Advice please
