I Miss My Hardtail :o(

After spending the last 3 years putting together a Scott FS Project bike, I'm not sure I like it.

I picked up a cheap Scott G-Zero P1 Frame back in 2007 with the aim of building it up.
Reba race Folks, Shimano XT/LX mixed gears and brakes (Hydraulic disc). RaceFace Evolve Cranks.

It rides very well, but Mrs CowboyBob has just got a Scott YZ1 as a starter bike (only £224 for the 09 model). it arrived today and I have assembled for her but while I was sitting on it it reminded me of my old YZ3 and how much fun I had on it's indistructable frame.

My Full Sus rides well and looks the part but I miss my having a YZ to use and abuse.
I think it's a bit like having a posh bird but hankering after a right slutty bird who likes it rough and dirty.

For me it's the hardtail I'd keep and the full suss I'd sell, if I had to sell one of 'em. But the best option is to have one of each. Or 2 of each  And a rigid, and a BMX, and a road bike. And a downhill bike of course.

Ok, I've had the same thing happen , today.
I've made up a Norco Bigfoot, 70 quid 2nd hand frame, rigid 30 quid forks, 100 quid g/set...

Did a 1.5hr very hard quiet road, lanes, trail and slate quarry, and it felt great!

Yeah, I couldn't take the descents as fast/hard as on my 5in travel rig, but, it was a blast.
I climbed 99% of the trail and with a Thudbuster, didn't get too hammered, butt-wise.

It made me search for the best lines, easiest and safest route and "give" with my arms/legs.
Took me back to 1986, and my first real bike, Coyote hardtail...dusky pink!

Making me SERIOUSLY reconsider, do I really need a new full sus, or get a hardtail trail bike that does it all????

The answer is... you bought the wrong FS.

FS's do not need to be sit back in an armchair type comfort with a high front end and a load of bob and weave going on.

I think I bought into the hype around FS bikes too much.
The bike is right for what I like, XC and Town.

of cource you do! HT's are more fun, just as capable, and more enjoyable. they are ALWAYS better :lol:

no, seriouly, i do pref HT's, but thats for my type of riding, and my style, and my prefereces. Many do find HT's to be more fun, and many think fs is the dogs. its very personal, if i was you sell the FS and buy a sweet Trail Ht with longer travel forks. They are like the ultimate fun machines IMO.
    I like bikes and stuff

i have been riding HT through the winter, going back to the FS last sunday was the weirdest feeling, i would still say the FS is more an allrounder and i still wouldnt consider taking the HT to wales?
I have ridden your FS and i find they do bob alot, but one of the guys i ride with loves his though?

Also I have found that although the FS is light I end up having to carry a shed load of locks to secure it. A bit counter productive.

I've given it two months riding and have come to the conclusion that the FS will get stripped down and a HT will rise like a phoenix from the ashes. :D

  • Why on earth wouldnt you take a hardtail to wales???? thats ridiculous, me and a load of mates ride afan and cody every year, weve all got hardtails, my chameleon will embarass many f/s on trail centre stuff..... no exactly massive freeride is it.... hardtails are for me just more fun 99.9 % of the time... but i accept for full on downhill f/s is quicker....wales is great on a hardtail...

To this date, I am very happy with FS. After getting bored, only if I will ever do, then most probably would get some weird and raddest new generation type school Ragley HT just for that crisper feeling of the trail.

But to some point there is truth in it, HT does have it's own place and should be included in a true man's fleet.
