iPhone Offline Map Apps

Does anyone use any iPhone apps for viewing maps offline without an Internet connection?

A lot of my cycling is in areas with either no data access or no phone signal at all - so it would be handy to view maps on my iPhone without an Internet connection...

I know the battery life isn't great on the iPhone - this would only be used when I'm lost!

Jonathan

PS. Can anyone recommend any good + cheap bike mounts?

Outdoors east of england, £25 for a 1\4 UK in OS 1:50 and the whole of the UK in a lesser scale. Works well.

I think they now do a multimap app where the maps are stored on the phone, think it's about £20-£25ish.

Routebuddy atlas and the memory map app both have offline OS maps, you have to buy the maps you want though and they're not exactly cheap... about a tenner per 1:50 "sheet"

I have the routebuddy app and its pretty good although i've heard the memory map one that came out recently is better and has cheaper mapping...

Yes. There's a low-cost app called Offmaps I use on my iPod Touch. It's especially useful If you have an iPhone because the GPS signal should show your current location even if there's no mobile signal. You can pre-load the maps by WiFi over the internet to avoid mobile data charges.

If your looking really cheap then you could try an app called files lite - it allows you to store any kind of file - so you could download maps or screen shots and store them there to be accessed when required, you can put detailed maps there as it has a zoom function etc - oh and its free. I have used it when hiking in more remote areas.
  • I'm really tempted to jailbreak my iPhone and install xGPS, which I believe is the only piece of software out there that turns the thing into a proper satnav with vocal instructions. It uses Google Maps, bits of which one can download on to the handset and access offline. Apple don't support it for fear of litigation.

My Nokia 5800 allows me to save web pages. I often save articles for reading on the Tube but this facility would also be great for this purpose. You could just save the relevant map pages you need for your ride.

Not sure if iPhone does this but worth looking into.
