used full suss

I did mountain biking years ago on a GT Pantera around Grizedale and loved it. Got into road biking last year and all winter and now I'm getting fitter want to return to xc mtbing. Only have about 450 to spend to start with so looking at used bikes but wouldn't mind a full suss. Wondering if its better to go for little used but low spec (i.e. Giant Yukon fx) or higher spec but older, say 6 or 7 years old ...or something else? :?
Any tips or model suggestions welcome.
Cheers

i would say save your money a little, probably about £600 or so will get you something decent, used.0

You could save your money but I persevered with that budget and found a tidy Stumpy FSR from 2004 and its great. Only going to get rid of it because I want a hartail again and can only afford 1 bike :roll:0

Beechy1 before you decide on FS bike, there is interesting thread which may help you to decide if you really need a FS ( http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtop ... t=12685424 ) .What could have been (Video)
I'll choose not put too much stake into someone's opinion who is admittingly terrible though0 -
Thanks for your replies, I'm gradually getting more of an idea what to go for.0

At this price point a hardtail is really going to make more sense tbh.Uncompromising extremist0

I agree, i bought a s/h full-suss (£900) and then spent half as much again replacing all the worn-out kit - although none of the rear suss gubbins has needed attention (yet!). I reckon you'd be able to get a unsold '08/09 HT from a shop for that sort of dosh...0 -

I would, personally, stick with a hardtail, 2nd hand, at that price. You'd get a mint year old £900 bike for £450. Most decent FS bikes start at around the £1000 mark new...
so might be more like £500 - £600 2nd hand.
I'd be wary of anything FS that's a few years old (unless you know what you're looking at) as you can spend the same again getting stuff replaced.
I've bought two 2nd hand bikes recently... mint condition 9 months old. Both half their original price. And both hardtails...
And both off this forum.Cool, retro and sometimes downright rude MTB and cycling themed T shirts. Just MTFU.
