Hi all, I'm getting into some long summer rides (100 miles) and need a decent comfortable waterproof back back with enough room for an overnight say (cange of clothes etc) can anyone recommend one? budget £100

thanks

  • I have a fantastic Lowe Alpine Air Zone 35. Has a built in rain cover, is big enough for an overnight change of clothes and has a water pouch, if you use them. It's also one of those "off the back" types of pack, that lets your back breath. Couldn't recommend it more highly. Took me two months to research and find the right pack.
    Summer - Cannondale Six Ultegra
Winter - Condor Bivio - cyclocross bike for commuting, cycle paths & rainy days - brilliant

LBS - Sigma Sport in Hampton Wick - Simply the best LBS
    Stolen - 2001 Specialized Allez Elite :-(

Danny - I'd get it off you and on the bike...100 miles wearing a pack will be torture!

I'd use a small saddle bag from Carradice... I have a Barley, Junior and Super C with a Quick Release. I can get enough kit in the former for a weekend in B&B and camping using the Super C.

thats got me thinking now, how far could you ride with a backpack before it starts to get uncomfortable?

I was 11 last time I cycled anywhere with a backpack. If i was planning a 100 mile summer ride I'd want the crap attached to the bike

Apologies for going off topic, slightly, but...

Pete - what's the Quick Release like to use? I'm looking at getting the stuff I carry in a messenger bag on my commute down onto the bike and I'm torn between getting an SQR Tour (16ltr) or a Pendle* (11ltr) with a Quick Release (or standard) Sport support.

The SQR Tour gets good reviews, but doesn't look anywhere near as classy as the Pendle!

    * Think the Barley will be a little too small for me at 7ltrs.

    I have this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vaude-Splash-Bi ... 142&sr=8-1

    Valde Splash 20+5 rucksack.

I used it for my 35 mile round trip commute and it is great. Carries all what I need for the day including shoes.

Has all the straps to fix it securely to your body so that it does not move around and sits off the back so you do not get a sweaty back apart from slightly where the main straps are.

For a rucksack, I have yet to think of anything else that this needs to do.

I use the Carradice SQR, have them fitted on 3 bikes so I can switch around the bags depending on use. The Tour is big, have a pal who uses one on his road bike. It does stick out rearwards quite a bit.

Its surprising how much you can fit a Barley when you put you mind to it... but commuting the Pendle would be a better choice...

Edinburgh Bicycles have some great own brand ones on sale - made by Vaude with built in waterproof covers.
