Apologies for the rather basic questions but i'm a bit cackhanded when it comes to anything mechanical :)

I have a Trek 8000 2007 model which i use for off-road and communting + everything in between. I'm getting a but fed up wit swapping tyres so was thinking to purchase a spare set of wheels that i can just swap in and out.

The bike has Shimano LX brakes with 6" rotors and Bontrager Race Disc wheels (although it says on the Trek website that the wheels are Bontrager select). I'm just reading what is written on the rim so if anybody knows for sure .....

The cassette is not the original one, it is an XT cassette.

So couple of questions -

1) I was thinking of purchasing some Shimano XT wheels. I would want the better wheels for off-road so does anybody know which would be the better set ie. the XT vs the ones i already have ?

2) If the ones i have are a good wheelset then perhaps someone could recommend a cheaper but reliable set of 26" wheels for use primarily on road/commuting ?

3) The cassette will be an XT cassette but i am confused as to the brake disc rotor i need. Does anyone know if the XT rotor would work with LX brakes or do i need a specific LX rotor ?

Finally, how easy would it be to assemble this stuff together. Is it really as simple as just connecting a few things up or are there some gotchas i need to know about.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Jon

  • not sure of the bontrager wheels as i have never used them and dont know anyone with them either, but as for your other questions
1- are these the xt wheels in question? http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/mountain- ... heels.html
2- if so yes they are a fine wheel and get many good reviews
3-disc rotors are compatible if your bonty wheels have centre lock disc (i am guessing though they will have 6 bolt) look at your hub on the disc side, if there are 6 t25 bolts(star shaped) then the answer is no you will have to purchase an adaptor or new centre lock disc's
finally changing wheels is the easy bit as is changing 6 bolt rotors (i have no experience of changing centre locks but with the right tools i think it is simple). as for changing cassettes again it is a simple process with the right tools, if you go on parktools website there are many workshops on there to be looking at to help you out, but your LBS wont charge you the earth to swap the bits over if you do get stuck

    Many thanks for the response.

As for answer 3). Does it matter what my wheels have at present ie. center lock vs 6 bolt because i will be using different wheels with different hubs so i just have to make sure any rotor i buy is compataible with the shimano hub ? Sorry if i'm not getting it.

I though the main issue with compatibility would be the XT rotor in the LX brake caliper ??

6 bolt gives more options for shimming the rotor. Rotor compatibility is one thing, but you have to shim it so the rotor sits in the same place or you will have to adjust the caliper every ride. And you still may have to adjust gears!

Okay thanks. So what is involved with shimming and how easy is it to do ? I don't really want to be messing around with adjusting gears/brake calipers every time i swap the wheels over if i can help it.

Would an LBS be able to set this up so that it was just a fit and forget thing.

You can get very thin rotor shims so you can get your rotors in the same place. They fit before the rotor as you install it, moving it out.
