Hi All,

Had my XC One wheels for 5 weeks now and really liked them up until the point this morning when I hopped over a little log (maybe 7 - 8 inches high) on the trail and for no apparent reason whatsoever the front wheel buckled badly on the nice, easy and soft landing. Have any of you had a similar problem? Any recommendations on different, stronger spokes to replace the existing ones with or am I stuck with Easton's own? Many thanks in advance!

Usually when this happens the damage was caused from a previous incident.

The strength of the spokes is not the problem - the build of the wheel is. Hopefully the rim is not flat spotted, or twisted beyond repair. You need a good wheel builder to true and tension it.

I have 2 sets of these wheels and have not had a problem with them, in fact I like them a lot, especially the mercifully quiet freehub and lateral stiffness. Neither pair are on bikes that get treated *badly* however both have been treated significantly worse than you describe your incident.

As SS says; When a wheel pings out like that it's usually a sign that it's been banged and trued before and is pinging out again. If you've only had the wheels for 5 weeks *from new* then this seems unlikely, unless the rims were badly bent when they were first put together, which I don't know but I honestly doubt

Easton XCOnes have straightpull DB spokes so I expect you're stuck with proprietary replacements (if you find somewhere you can specify / buy starightpull DB spokes, please let me know I need some for my road bike!) however if no spokes are actually broken then, as SS also says (damn, he's just so RIGHT, you know? ) not much point thinking about replacing them ... you need the rim trued (and hopefully it's not B**gered)

I would certainly ask the guys who sold you the wheels to take a look at them but, tbh, they're not very likely to believe your description of the fall, as there's no evidence either way. You never know though, maybe they've seen it before so worth a try.

now, if you bought the wheels second hand ... then I would return to seller, they were probably pranged in an earlier life
Everything in moderation ... except beer
Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer

If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day
  • Thanks Guys,

The wheels were bought new from Wiggle and were absolutely spotless when they arrived in the box. I've never crashed then, dinged them or whatever and they were perfectly straight and true up until this morning! The spokes weren't damaged and are unbroken - just a buckled rim and some looser spokes there. The wheel is at the bike shop to get trued and I hope that sorts it out. I appreciate the points on straight pull spokes too - double ended spokes being as they are - so will see what they say.
