Good morning all.

Have just bought my first road bike ( Spesh Allez Sport!), well since i was a nipper, and i need some advice on a helmet!

Was looking to spend around £50-£60. Is this enough for a decent one or should i be spending a little more?

Whats the difference between say a £50 lid and a £100 one?

Also, can anyone recommend one?

Thanks for all your help :)

Helmets are thermoformed pieces of expanded polystyrene... they're all pretty much the same. If you plan to go somewhere warm (like Alps or Pyrenees in summer) get one with good ventilation... other than that, the only parameter is to find one that fits your skull size.
50 pounds is more than adequate as a budget.

  • +1 for the above advice. Your budget will get a decent lid so get the one you like the look of and fits best.

there is a British Standard for helmets, and I believe all those on sale in the UK must meet that standard, so other than that its down to fit, styling and ventilation etc.

I'd recommend trying a few and remember that if you are thinking about riding in colder weather, you'll do well with some form of skullcap/hat, so make sure you get a helmet with enough adjustability to allow you to wear it with/without something underneath.

Oh, and most importantly, the colour must match your bike
