Hi,

As per subject - looking at a purchase of a Planet X SL Pro Carbon - but could do with some info on sizing. From the chart and comparing to my current bike ( 58 cm 2009 Speicalized Allez) I would need either a large or XL. Given the choice of stem size etc that Planet X offer I was thinking I could get away with a Large rather than going to the XL ...but can anyone who's made a similar move offer any guidance?

I'm 6ft 2in - pretty even on legs / upper body length if that helps.

Also - on the bike itself - do SRAM rival brake cables go under bar tape ?

Thanks

I switched from a 2007 Allez 58cm to an XL SL Pro Carbon about 18 months ago. I'm 6'3" with long legs. Using a 110mm stem, the same size as on the Allez, the overall the reach is very slightly longer.

One thing to watch is the shorter headtubes on the Planet X. The XL is 15mm lower at the front than the Spesh, and the L 40mm. With the carbon fork steerer, you can't use too many spacers, so the L will put you in a very low / racy position compared to the Allez.

And yes, SRAM cables do run under the tape!

I'm 6' 1" and went from a 58 spech allez to a large PX pro sl.

The fit on the PX is much better.

Got a 110mm stem with a set back FSA seatpin.

I am shorter than you (6ft) but ride 58 on most of my bikes (including a couple of Specializeds) and went for a L Planet X. I have a 110mm stem on it and a fairly forward saddle position, you might want some layback or a slightly longer stem.

Friend is I think 6ft1 or 2 (taller anyway) and he also has a PX in L.

They sure can help. You get even more precise answers if you take some measurements first. Some good advice is found e.g. here:

  • I've emailed Ian at Planet X and covered all sorts of questions - but still comes down to Large or X Large.

The Allez equivalent top tube length and 12cm stem combined is 69.5cm, whereas the Planet X large is 68cm and the X Large is 71cm ( 12cm stem)
No big deal - could buy another shorter stem on the X Large if too long - though can't change the spec of the SLPro Carbon SRAM Rival build I am looking at getting so would be more money.

Headtube height is more a concern - Allez is high ( 20.5cm with 2cm cone and 2cm spacer). I think - though not 100% that the Large Planet X is 20cm overall ( 3.3cm spacer) , XLarge is just under 22.5cm with same spacers so closer to Allez.

I think as the stem height is the biggest change from my curent bike I should look at X Large. Guess now I need to decide between black or white !...any views ?

The headtube measurements I have (excluding spacers) are:

    58cm Allez - 205mm headtube plus 20mm cone = 225mm

    XL Planet-X - 190mm headtube plus 15mm cone = 205mm

So if you are using 20mm spacers on the Allez, you would need 40mm on the Planet-X to get the bars at the same height. Personally, I wouldn't go with more than 30mm of spacers on a carbon steerer, in which case you'll end up 10mm lower overall.

The large sounds like it's going to be too short in the headtube, as it's 25mm lower again.

Stems are very cheap items to change and you won't know for sure anyway until you actually have the bike.

White looks better but will be a pain in the neck to keep clean, that is what is boils down to.
  • Cheers for the cone size info.

I had pretty much decided on the X Large as the option to go for on the basis that the Large was just going to be too low in the headtube compared to my current bikes.

I think I will be fine with the change in height I would have with the X Large and with the cone size that's less of a problem now.

    Thanks again
