New handlebars

Just had a bike fit, and was told that I need to lose 30mm from the reach, either from the stem or a combo of that and handlebar reach.

Been looking at the 3t Ergonova's and was wondering if someone can answer me what is probably a dumb question.

The reach measurement is normally from top centre to furthest part on drops centre, but would the reach measurement affect the distance from top centre to the hoods?I

I've read some stuff in tinternet about the Ergonova's width being measured centre to centre on the lowest part of the drops, and because the drops flare out, the width on the hoods are different. There are lots of post mentioning people that normally take a 42cm bar, have had to go up to a 44cm bar.

Can anyone confirm this?

If the Ergonovas have a 20mm shorter reach (say) than your current bar, you'll find the reach to the hoods reduces by nearly as much.

They do flare at the drops, which means my 44s ride more like a 42 when on the hoods. I'd like a 46 ideally, but I'm prepared to compromise because they're so comfy for riding in the drops.

Incidentally, a 30mm reduction in reach sounds quite a lot - do you feel massively stretched out on your current setup?

    3 T - Simply the best !
  • Thanks, thats what I thought about the reach. I've lost 20mm already through stem and bar change, and feel much better.

On your 44cm ergonova's, can you measure the width centre to centre on the hoods for me.

Width of the bar centre-centre at the hoods is 42.5cm.

The FSA bars flare in the same way too as far as I know.

    +1 for 3T bars.
I have Ergosum Team bars and they are the best bars I have ever had.

I have a related question, I have just received my 3T Ergosum Pro handlebars after a bike fit last year suggested a lower drop handlebar would be better. At the moment I am running a 100mm stem but the new bars have a shorter reach (by approx 10-20mm) which will obviously pull the hoods/levers closer to me. Should I adjust for this by going to a 110mm stem - or will it not matter?

    Thanks for any input.

On my recent bike fit, I was given the "after fit" measurements. One of the key measurements was the saddle tip to hoods measurement.

Funnily enough, I've just emailed the guy and he confirmed basically, as long as the measurement is right, the change can be effected by bar/stem or combination of a change of both.

Thanks Marin Maniac - that's exactly the kind of info I was after - I'll be ordering a new stem then!
