This is my second ultegra in the last 6 months, this time I was motoring at over 25mph. The chain has only been fitted two weeks and am starting to get sick of 10 speed set ups, its all I seem to read at the minute.

Can anyone please recommend me a chain that won't break.

don't even want to look at state of bike, I know its wrecked both STI;s/front and rear wheel/crushed SL pedal. Also have carbon reynolds bars and Isaac fork as well tearing all my clothing and flesh.

Luckily it was at night so no traffic to drive over me whilst lying in the road.

Really sore and hacked off

I had a big crash because of a snapped chain about a year ago. That was caused by a KMC chain.

I've not had a wippermann chain snap on me yet though, so you could try one of those.

Ultegra 6600 or 6700 Karl ?? I`m running both types on different bikes, got the bikes out yesterday and cleaned the chains off thoroughly to check `em over.properly. Both look fine, so maybe there is a bad batch floating about (how many is a batch though  ) Had the 6700 chain on since about October last year, not done that much due to crap weather though, maybe 200 miles total  The 6600 was new the other week on a new (to me) build, only done about 100 miles (some hard climbs though)

  • they were both 6600 (purchased as a set of three from CRC 8 months ago, not going to use the third surprisingly enough) but am concerned coz have a 6700 fitted to my cayo, are they going to be weaker due to cut outs in side plates.

Knocks confidence when doing intervals at the moment, just annoying that something that cost £16 can cause so much damage, had it have been my cayo could well have been written off.

There are a few other threads on this forum regarding the Ultegra chains, it's worth reading them all.

Are the breakages all happening on the face that has the slits in, i.e the inside face of the directional chain? I've had 4 of these to deal with and the fractures are all on the same face.

Be careful to look for the small hairline fractures that appear on them. I was carrying out a routine service the other day and found one of these chains with 4 separate fractures. One of which was about to completely snap.. judging by the size of the crack. The owner of the bike was completely unaware. He is now though and his original chain which was two months old is on it's way back to Shimano for inspection.

    Karl,
I`ll have the un-used 6600 chain off you if you want to sell it.

PM me a price with p+p (will be a good price obviously, due to their unreliability issues)

Only 4 to deal with, not a problem though is it

Still no news or advice from Shimano or shops on this

not going to use the third surprisingly enough.

It would be interesting to check the unused chain carefully for any cracks to see if they are there from new.

I'm inspecting all the new ones that come into my hands and there are no fractures to begin with. I'm refusing to use them now though, and replacing the damaged ones with Dura-ace.

So at the moment Shimano still get our money, but this could change very soon if no explanation comes out from them.

Will be taking new chain into work tonight and apply dye penetrant which should highlight any cracks under microscope.

Had only just cleaned, lubed and inspected each individual sideplate and roller on saturday afternoon prior to riding yet both sideplates failed at the same time with no audible click to highlight one side failing.
