Hi, having a mid life crisis so started cycling last year aged 48 did Liverpool to Chester & back followed by my first Tri in September on a trail bike loved it. Now I want a road bike as they whizzed past me like I was running in mud with me wellies on. Problem is I don't understand the different spec's, been looking at the following hope this makes sense.

Raleigh, Avanti carbon comp 2009, full shimano 105 groupset 53/59 chainset from Wiggle £975.

Planet X sl Pro carbon sram rival £999.

Focus Cayo 105 2010, full carbon, Shimano 105 FSA Gossamer pro compact chainset 50/54 Wiggle £960.

Dolan Mythos Carbon fork Alloy steering tube, group set compag veloce 10 speed. Mate thinks this is the bike I should get, but he knows less than me. Formby cycles £1100.

Chris Boardman, team carbon, SRAM rival 20 speed gearing, SRAM S350 GXP compact chainset £999. + £50 quid off accessories. I really like this, just because I like the look of it really.

Cannondale CAAD 9 Tiagra compact 2010, Alloy frame carbon forks, Shiman Tiagra for all gears, chain, brakes chainrings 34/50 from Ev ans £1000.

I know you lot get battered with beginners asking for help, but any advice would be really appreciated and hopefully it well others too.

Many Thanks :?

Ride as many of them as you can for a start, and then buy the one you like best :)

The Boardman team carbon is getting great reviews, it's well priced and well equipped. And the fact that you like the look of it is reason enough alone to buy it imo. You want to walk into your shed and be able to admire your bike. It'll encourage you to take it out and use it. No use having a bike that you don't like the look of particularly, no matter how well spec'd up it is.

All of the bikes you list are very good bikes at that price - you won't go wrong with any of them. Buy whichever one you like the fit of / looks of best - preferably get a fitting if possible. :D
