Easy team,
Ive got a mate who is just looking into getting a MTB through the cycle to work scheme, he will be using it for commuting a few miles every day to and from work and as a beginner - intermediate ride at the weekends.
I have given him some guidance on geometry, specification etc, and the kind of travel he needs, but do you guys have any recommendations on £500 - £1000 hardtails with about 100mm travel?....its not exactly my area of expertise.
Cheers

£500 to a grand? Can you narrow it because that is a huge variation. You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.0 -
In my limited experience related to being in the same situation 6 months or so ago, you must decide on what you can afford and buy to that limit. The reason - you either take to it - and then spend hours wandering how to turn you 500 bike into a 1000 bike, and posting what rear mech threads on here (which isnt bad, btw) - or it gets left in the garage, when you may wish to sell it - after a year of course ?
Me, I went bang in the middle, £699 for a GT avalanche 1.0 - great for me, personally - probably more than enough for all my riding but some in reserve. I just think buy cheap buy twice etc (realise many on here think 700 is cheap and buy forks for that - again its personal)
You could also show your mate this websiteBtwin Triban 3

I am going for the Boardman Pro HT Limited Edition, I can't see a better bike for £1000 really (well, not from Halfords).
also the value for money seems to be fantastic, even without the 40%+ saving you get on the scheme.0 -

you's better be quick they are all going fast apparently.
only thing with the ltd is that they dont get the £50 accessories voucher with it...spec is the same as the standard pro...doesnt seem worth it to me!0 -

genesis altitude 10 is good too, and steel0 -
Ive been lucky enough to get myself a Limited Edition reserved at my local Halfords while I wait for my vouchers to arrive0

Remember with the halfords C2W scheme you can contact them and get them to source you pretty much any bike you want, not just what halfords supplies. Send them an email with a list of the bikes you are looking at and they reply with whether they can source them or not. I have done this twice and had bikes from leisurelakes.com and wiggle.co.uk 8)0
