First post ever in MB section
If this question was for a raod bike I would know the answer, but its not for road bike and not for me.
My daughter is 21 and has some how decided she wishes to buy a bike and ride to work and off road!!
This I believe is a fad and will not last, and the furthest she ever rode was about 50 m when 14 !!
For this reason I am looking for advice on what bike and size may be a good deal.
WHen I started back racing, I bough 2 second hand bikes, one to race, one winter, until I decided if I was going to be serious again. I got two very good deals, both off ebay (yes I know you have to be careful which is why I am asking for tips for MTB)
I think a new bike may not be best option as I could end up paying £300 for a bike that may not be much cop, whereas maybe I could get something decent and reliable for up to £200 second hand?
Are there other sites for second hand MTBother than ebay? I have not looked yet and will look myself also but tips and sites welcome.

Buying new has many advantages such as being able to try for size, having the bike professionally built and set up, free service and of course a warranty.
You forgo all this buying 2nd hand - do you know what mechanically you are looking at? Can be a good choice for the experienced, but not so good for novices.
There are some decent starter bikes for 2-300 quid such as the Decathlon Rockriders.0 -
Yes I have lots of experience with mechanics and do everything on my 5 road bikes and two track bikes and really looking for advice on models really.
There are so many people (probably like my daughter) who take up cycling and then get fed up quickly and sell their bike so for this reason I do not particularly want to spend on a new bike which may get used half a dozen times then have to seel it so I hope some one can suggest decent bikes to look at so I can check ebayor other sites.0 -
I'd look for an old Rockhopper, say 2007 or so - good frames and parts, and pretty light. Retailed at 5-600 quid so may be able to pick up for that.
Other choices would be a GT Avalanche 1.0, Trek 4500 and Carrera Fury.0 -
you might be a little late trying to get last years models cheap in the shops, but i got a Voodoo Bantu for £225.25 when it was initially £5700
