Hi everyone

Im looking to get a new hardtail mountain bike on the cycle scheme and want to pay about £1000 and maybe a bit more if the shop allows me.

I ride cross country trails and may even enter the odd race this year. I dont do anything too exreme but want a decent bike that is up to a good all day session in the hills! Ive been off the mountain biking scene for a long time and am coming back in to it. I still have my GT avalance with manitou front suspension and v brakes and deore lx throughout and although its done brilliantly, its now nackered!!

Im not up on what is better..sram components or deore and i have no idea what disc brakes are the best.

So basically Im looking for advuice off everyone as to what you think i should get. I looked at the boardman pro in halfords as ive seen some good write ups on this but my work dont operate the scheem through halfords, only independant shops.

Any help is VERY much appreciated!!

Thanks!!

Nick

My choices would be, if you want a racey XC bike, a Cube LTD Team (£949), or if the shop allow you through either a tiny discount or top-up then the Cube LTD Race at £1039.

    If you want a less racy, more 'trail' bike I'd look seriously at Leisure Lakes's Orange Crush which they have custom spec'ed to get under a grand;

I've just bought my first MTB with this scheme and got a Trek 6300. My biking habits will be pretty much what you do (when the snow in the hills finally goes!). I've been told by a couple of hardcore MTBers that it's a good entry level bike; certainly all I need for now (so probably you too, by the sounds of it). The bike was £850 and the other £150 was spent on helmet, gloves etc.

It's a real headache to choose a bike first off but I'm sure there'll be plenty more advice coming your way soon; most from those with better knowledge than I, without doubt! But I thought I'd offer my opinion; I'm happy with my Trek. See it here:

    Cheers for the re3sponses.

Ive been doing some research and reading loads of these forum articles and theyre so helpful.

A lot of peoiple seem to be rating the Cube Ltd RAce and it looks superb for the money...rock shox reba, xt front and rear mechs etc. I havent seen many bikes for the same price with a similar spec.

I will look at orange crish aswell...a mate of mine has one and said it was cool and a mate has also bought a trek 6500 which he really likes (although he prefers sram to deore).
What do you think the diference is between the manitou minute for and the rock shox rebas? Would you say rocj shox are better?

    Cheers!

Blimey! Beats me! I'm a complete newbie. I'll have to leave it to the others to answer that one!

If you can spend another £500 then I'd recommend the Whyte 905. Or the 901 if the budget doesn't allow.

Gets me slightly moist each time I see my 905 in the garage.

Although this year's model is slightly less well specced than last year's it's still amazing value:

What I like about Whyte's (and Orange) is that they are designed for British trails and the conditions they throw up. And that's a bigger seller to me than some Trek or Spesh bike designed and tested on nice, dry and dusty Californian trails.
