Winter Trainer Frame

Hi

I want a frame for winter training must be fairly comfortable over long distances and fairly fast. It must take full guards and 25mm tyres, the option of 28mm would be nice but not really necessary. Rack mounts not a necessity. Not bothered about brand or material. Cross frames considered too. Already have S/S - must be geared. Could stretch to 250'ish quid but would much prefer under 200.

So far I'm thinking the Dolan frame (Preffisso or something - sounds like a coffee) or Planet X Kaffenbach.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Fantastic frame, just takes 25mm Marathon+ tyres. Here it is built up from last week:

Bit of a Frankenbike as it has bits of my old winter bike, some new components and the new frame. It takes standard drop brakes.

    Interesting choices. Ridley looks great!

    FCN 2-4.

    "Exactly."
  • How about one of the last few Uncle Johns in stock at Planet-X?

Or perhaps a DHC "Meteor" frame (with optional extras available) from Dave Harding... not the infamous Dave Hinde.

Is it just me, or are you a bike binge? You were considering a 29er or a traditional 26" hardtail recently too. If so, lucky you! :D

Yep - bike binge. One Look racer (funded by insurance claim due to dead Ribble), one winter trainer - using up bits in the shed on new frame, one new MTB on cyclescheme - 26 One One hardtail. Also selling a FS MTB soon. Working out strangley cheap - may be costing £500-800 if you figure in everything...hopefully.

Ribble are doing a clearance of ex-dem stock - may be worth a look. :D

Get one built by a British frame maker to the exact spec you want. That's what I did. Got Bob Jackson to make my perfect winter bike.

I think that might come to slightly more than the OP's maximum budget of £250 :)

Yes, nice idea - nice price...

Thanks anyway. So Ribble, Ridley, Dolan and Planet X so far. Ribble are even cheaper than I remember....

Can't get 25mm tyres to fit under rear mudguard on my Ribble winter frame. Fouls the mudguard near the brake bridge-tried a few tweaks but makes no difference.
23mm tyres only when guards are fitted- it actually says this in their blurb.

That's useful - not Ribble then...
