I'm looking for a brakeless fixed wheel single speeder for commuting around the city, something really simple, what would you recommend?

Have a look here, and make sure you get a front brake...

I ride 40 miles a day fixed commuting.

I would NOT dream of doing it brakeless.

    Illegal, and TERMINALLY stupid.

Especially in poor weather, a lack of controllable back brake is pretty dangerous, as grabbing a fist full of front brake on wet, icy and generally treacherous roads is going to get you straight into a "tarmac kiss".

When I rode fixed I was grateful of my back brake on more than one occasion

plus if you use drops it's nice to have two hoods to ride on.

I still have two levers after removing the back brake. Have considered ditching them in favour of a finger brake, but also like the riding position.

The redundant one is also useful for hanging shopping off of.
  • Less aggressively, why brakeless? I'm genuinely curious. Personally I have just a front - and wouldn't go without it. Is it a weight thing? Or what?

  • Oh yes, I kept both levers too - there's just nothing wired up to the left one.

  • For a cheap FGSS, look at the Mongoose Maurice, £350.

If you are very lucky, you might pick up a 2009 Specialized Tricross Singlecross reduced to £350 (like I did in December), which you could get a fixed gear added to the other side of the rear hub.

my pista has 2 brakes as it's a flip flop hub, so if I ever swap it back I'm less likely to die
