Swansea to North Wales

I'm planning a trip from Swansea to North Wales (then home to Preston) in the summer, taking 3 days, on an MTB with slicks. Has anyone any suggestions of decent routes through Mid-Wales? What is the A483 like? I know about the Lôn Las Cymru, but that would take me too far West. Is there a way of not entirely killing myself in the hills, but staying off the main roads through the valleys?

    I wouldn't cycle on the A483.
    I like bikes...

The A483 is probably fine to ride until your past Oswestry, after that it turns into dual carriageway around Wrexham and would be pretty bad but the run from Llandeilo/Llandovery uptowards Newtown etc is allright, some bits are a bit lonely if you decide you want to buy a mars bar but it's a pleasant enough country main road
