Today we have had to cancel the above race! There will be some fallout from riders and this is understandable, however I'm keen to relay the facts surrounding the cancellation.

In early February it was brought to the attention of myself that there were sections of the Seamer course that hand significant potholes.

4 days later I drove the course and took photographs of the areas of concern, and sent an email to Highways

At the same time I contacted Ian Bartholomew and Steve Walton to advise that in its current state the Seamer course was unridable.

As it seemed likely that the circuit would not be repaired in time we contacted the Police & Highways to get an agreement in principle to us using an alternative course, the only known circuit is Ingelby Greenhow which has its own issues.

We submitted two alternative courses with our preference being Scorton. This week we received notice from Police/Highways that they had safety concerns around, The Give Way at Scorton Village and traffic volumes during the car boot sales on the main road, we had already considered the car boot sale, with the organiser starting the race at 1.30. The Give Way issue has not been resolved, the police/highway require a. riders must stop at the Give Way, which is clearly unacceptable as a race
or
b. a legally empowered marshal (we did source a traffic management company)

However the Police have stated we need to apply for 16a road closure and the time scale for the application is 2 weeks. In essence we tried to keep the event running but could nt meet all the requirements put upon us.

Actions

REO to meet with Yorkshire Police and Highway next Tuesday to discuss a process and measures required to enable races to go ahead including Scorton.

All organisers to inspect their proposed courses and advise the relevant highways of the condition with evidence and date of event (photographs and map)prefered. If appropriate indentify alternative courses in good time and work consultantivly with all stakeholders.

Comments

  • Which early February? 2010, 2009 or 2008? That particular road has been crap for years.

I doubt it will be repaired at all this year, as it's on a boundary between two feuding councils, each claiming it's the others responsibility, so I'd expect more races to be cancelled. The Battersby circuit requires outriders, and the locals moan like pissy little bastards about races in that area so I doubt that would be used alternatively. Scorton seemed like a good alternative but this might not even be able to be used as a circuit either.

A few team members have expressed concern about the local police simply telling NE race organisers to use Croft all the time as it avoids any issues on open roads. Wouldn't that be fun!

There is a training race at Hetton On Saturday. £5 enter on line, no points or prizes, monies to cover circuit hire.
No other race in NE that you could enter now, 2 TT's not far away - a 10 at Stockton and a hilly 32 over in Cumbria, but as both Open events no EOL.
  • The old days would be a pre race briefing with "careful lads some big potholes on the back of the circuit"
Today the race gets cancelled, everyone is pissed off and wonders why they spent £68 on a racing licence.

Surely the organisers could just fill the holes on the downlow... its only got to last a day after all... it'd probably be a health & safety nono but, if they didnt tell anyone...not that it matters now!

So an email gets sent round saying racing is cancelled due to a venue (circuit) not beng available, yet there's a training race on?

    WTF?

@Cyan: If I hadn't spent a ton of money on bikes, kit etc I'd seriously consider going back to swimming.

presumably hetton hawks didn't want it cancelled...So why was it not held on the Sunday?? I didn't get an email about it either so it was a good thing I bothered checking the website.

What time is the training race?
