Shocking statistic

Apparently 95% of the money raised by a charity for Ethiopia was syphoned off and spent on arms. It kind of puts you off giving.
Smarter than the average bear.

I doubt it was the full 95%. A large proprtion would have gone into some fat-cat Charidee Directors back pocket (admin costs luvee) before ever reaching Ethopia. The remainder that goes to Ethopia, there's will be the Tribal Leaders cut... ...the remainder would then have been spent on arms.
...I may be having a cynical day. :?Cycling weakly0 -
This is 95% of the money that actually got to Ethiopia after expenses and everything.
The guy who spent it on arms has fessed up.Smarter than the average bear.0 -
I heard those stats and was shocked.0

Do you know that a lot of collectors have a deal by which they get to keep a percentage collected. When I found that out I started only giving to organisations i know and trust and NEVER to anyone who's collecting in the street.0

I wasn't in the least bit shocked. I'm going through a very cynical phase to say the least which I'd like to escape!0

thats why i ignore them, you never know how much (if any) of your £5.00 actually gets to the cause it was intended for?0

it doesnt surprise me. thats why i never give. its pretty much the same with that live aid.0

According to the BBC it's $95m, not 95% of the aid money(still, it is shocking enough).
This is only one man's claim though - I don't know if he has any hard evidence to back it up. I doubt the rebels bothered with keeping accounts.0 -

bbc news at dinnertime were showing the figure of donation at $100million so $95 million/$5million split to charity0 -

I'm looking at the website: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/8535189.stm
It says that $100m went through rebel hands, not that $100m went to charity. But then maybe you've seen something different on the TV news.0
