Not another effing puncture!

[rant] 4 punctures in 4 days. All due to tiny bits of flint that have mysteriously appeared on Lincolnshire roads over the winter and probably from the grit. Last summer was great: long warm days bimbling around without a care in the world and NO punctures. Now it's all cold and rain and faffing around at the side of the road changing tubes every 5 miles [/rant]

Feel better now, thanks for listening.

Are you stalking me? YES, I have Conti Ultra Sports. Or at least I will until I get home and then they'll be in the bin.

Punctures? What are they? Oh, I remember now ... last one was in 2004, a hawthorn thorn IIRC.

You're probably right about the grit, Mike. It was always when the gritters were out that I used to get punctures on my old commute. The worst one was with frozen fingers, in the pitch dark down a country road, trying to make a repair while holding my front light clamped between my teeth.

    *shudders*

    Horrible.

Cheaper and far tougher, a whole winter punc^%$e free. Not bad performance but not the best in the wet.

I have the misfortune of riding on the Greenway in London and going past the Olympic works near Stratford - last p//ncture was a stanley blade in Schwalbe Marathon +'s, one before a builders staple, one before that a syringe needle - made a really neat little hole too.
    I feel your pain.
I guess I'd have a load more with other tyres....

Four this year on the winter bike, and yes I have Ultrasports on it. Since I have been using them I seem to have suffered more than my fair share.

Usully get punctures from the attrocious state of the roads in Bolton, the holes are really quite huge now. A road from Horwich into Chorley called Chorley Road is absolutely horrific! I found my hands and arms would aching terribly after riding along there.

Bolton's roads, probably the worst in the North West. I do wonder if I can claim off the council for every screwed tube from a snakebite?

I have both the Ultra sports and Vittoria Zaffiro but have the Zaffiro on the back, with the Ultra on the front and have been fine.

Did get a few with the Ultra on the back so did the swap and have not had a problem since.
Do have to say that the Zaffiro is not great in the wet.

schwalbe stelvios never seem to get mentioned much on this site. are they heavy or something ive never weighed them. all i know is i put them on, pump them up and ride. winter isnt the time to be leaning your bike hard over and jamming on the brakes, but id be surprised if anything gripped much better. the current set admittedly were new before winter, about late september but ive been riding ever week since then in heavy rain, gritty mud, freezing temperatures and gritted roads as of yet no punctures or cutting at all.

I thought 3 in 3 days was bad. 4 in 4 is a different league though. And yes, I put it down to fake-but-ferociously-sharp grit too!

Please don't tell me that going for Rubino Pros was a bad idea, please. I hate cycling thinking that I'm just about to get another visit, which is what a small run of daily punctures do to me.

    Rubino Pro's - last p*ncture exactly 1050 winter miles ago. :D
Can't remember what an inner tube looks like.
If this isn't tempting fate I don't know what is

  • Vittoria Rubino Pros with the grip, used them since October, 3 times a week on the turbo too, no punctures.

I commuted on Conti Ultra Sports for 12months in Warrington.

Only got a couple of punctures once I started to wear the tread really thin. Obviously everyone else who uses/used them must have been riding in the gutter and aiming for every bit of glass in the road.

The Rubber tread on the Ultra Sports was noticeably thicker than any other tyre I've ever used, so I don't know how people managed to get so many punctures.

another vote for Schwalbe Stevios here :) On my second set now - I have had a few punctures on them though - last one a few months back...
Have they discontinued this tyre though ? can't seem to see them on Wiggle or other sites , think the replacement is Durano Plus ?

At least you guys got the punctures whilst riding, I got mine by cleaning the bike. Still cannot work out why. :? :?
