Help with SPD's 'clicking'

Hi, wonder if someone can help me with this please.

I'm new to SPD's and have recently fitted some Shimano 540's to my MTB and have been out practicing on the bike with shoes. All has been going well, however, the last couple of nights out riding, I've been experiencing a dull clicking sound during the pedal stroke on one side and a sensation on the sole of the shoe that something is not fitted quite right.

I'm not sure if this is due to an alignment problem with the cleats or problem with the pedal itself and I wondered if anyone else had experienced anything like this any tips for fixing it.

thanks :D

Double check the cleat bolts are tight enough

un-clip and pedal with the shoe on the pedals do you still get the same "feel"?

No? re clip and where is it happening in the stroke. often it is just the up and down free play.

I have had a similar sounding problem with my SPDs. found it out to be grit in the cleats. Took them out and cleaned them, no more problem.

If you are a spud first timer you tend to keep your release springs on the light side?
If this is so you get a little rocking feeling through you foot when pedaling?
This because the spring is light and the mechanism is moving slightly, try tightening your springs up a touch, can also be down to grit and dirt in and around your cleat or pedal as others have said.

I clean in and around my cleats post ride with a wire brush.
