Getting Cranky - Crankarm problem?

Hello!
Been cycling to work now for two whole weeks!
Absolutely loving it and have been lurking on these here forums so hi!
Anyway, no doubt this has been asked many many times.
Was cycling along yesterday and looked down and noticed my left crankarm seems to be a bit detatched...it's not exactly loose, feels quite sturdy but there is a gap. Who knows if this has been like it since I bought the bike (from ebay) about three wees ago or if it's a recent development. I managed to unscrew the bolt with a ratchet to try and see if I could resolve this but the crankarm just will not budge. Here are two pictures:

Have been reading around other forums and people seem to shout STOP! DON'T CYCLE WITH IT LIKE THAT! Which is fair enough, but I also noticed other bikes in the rack at work and also elsewhere with similar such gaps.
So, am I being paranoid? Or do I need to get this fixed?
Thoughts and opinions much appreciated.

OK, having a gap is normal.
as you say there is no felt movement. so it is fine."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Look perfectly OK to me.
You may see newer bikes with a different system (Hollowtech2 or Campag equivalent) which don't have that gap, but yours appears to be a square taper bottom bracket and it looks just fine.
You won't be able to remove the cranks without a special tool.0 -
Thanks guys!
Feel slightly foolish now!

Just check the torque on the crank bolts... That way you'll know that the crank arm is far enough up on the square taper as it should be.
Apart from that I wouldn't worry!0
