AM rear tyre

Hey Im looking for a new rear tyre and was wondering if I could get people's opinions on good options for AM riding. I forget what my front tyre is, some specialised one...
I tend to ride rocky wooded trails but am looking for a tyre that holds well on most surfaces. The bike is a specialised epic if that matters at all...
Cheers!

I Can recommend my Maxxis High Roller 2.35...however a few guys that I ride with say that the newer Maxxis Ardent tyre is even better. It may be wise to check your front tyre and perhaps swap that to the back and replace the front, because IMO you don't want a situation with more grip on the rear than the front.Santa Cruz Chameleon

Oh really? Is it that much of an issue having more grip on the front?
I was looking at the 2.25 nobby nics or are those more XC tyres?0 -
Nics are okay, but the sidewalls are a bit thin.
My vote would be the rampage, which is a hugely underrated tyre and is utterly brilliant!!0 -
Never had a problem with my Nobby Nics and I've run them at some pretty low pressures, sub 20psi.
The new version has been improved, 15% less rolling resistance and more grip and is an AM tyre. Now where's that "Get Out of Crash Free Card"0 -
im running a ardent on the back of my bike, its ok, hooks up good, rolls fast but has limited off camber grip, i will be running it on the front with a larsenn tt on the rear when it gets dryer as the ardent is ment to be a lot better on the front than the back.0

specialized epic isn't an all mountain bike- t's an xc race bike0

I've got a Rubber Queen 2.2 and have been very happy with it - seems to get good reviews quite consistantly. Expensive though.
If you are looking for a good value tyre with good grip I'd look at the Maxxis Minion DH Front single ply - very highly rated across all the magazines/forums. Ignore the 'front' bit and just put it on backwards... Not the quickest but very good for the money. I picked up some for my brother recently for £23 an end (Ribble Cycles I think) so very reasonably priced... Quite puncture-proof too I believe.
HOWEVER, like MacandCheese said, you don't really want more grip on the rear than the front (ask yourself which tyre you'd rather lose grip with!) so you'd have to look at both your tyres rather than just sticking this on the rear (or put this on the front and transfer the front to the rear)...

Another vote for the high rollers and minions here!
I run a 2.35 minion dhf on the front of my stumpy and a 2.35 high roller on the back.
Get the 60a compound and they will last for ages!! I've done nearly about 800 miles on ma high roller and its only half worn0 -
Woops, double post.0
-
A high roller is a good coice for an AM tyre but as JamesBrckmn said, the epic is a very XC focused bike. Might be best to stick to XC tyres in order to play to its strengths.0
-
My 2004 stumpy is a xc bike as well though and I have a lot of DH kit on it and it is great0

Conti Vertical ProTection Black Chili?
Just ordered 2 for my bike so I hope they're good.0 -
Get the vertical for the rear by all means, great rear tyre, but try a maxxis ignitor on the front if you want a similar tyre to it but the maxxis grips much better0
-
spesh the captain 2.2 (60 and 70a)0
-
If you get the spesh tyres make sure you get the 60a compound. The harder compounds slip and slide everywhere. Not worth the lack of rolling resistance tbh0
-
+1 for maxxis HR as a rear tyre. My current faveEverything in moderation ... except beer
Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer
If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day0 -
peter 413- the spesh is dual compound- softer on the shoulders for grip in the corners, harder in the middle for quicker and longer lasting rolling0

Not all of themn are,
It's like with Kenda Nevagals, most of them are dual compound but some are not0 -
ardent up front and high roller at the back definaitly not fast but you will stick to everything!
have tried the caption controls from spesh but ripped the side walls apart in about two months? grip was ok and they were fast but not when they only last that long.
also try out larsons for dry days (when we get them) they are fast and fairly sturdy0 -
I'm about to buy some new rubber. I am after an AM set up with loads of front end grip and a faster rolling rear that also grips well.
Was thinking of trying a 2.35 High Roller on the front with the 2.25 Ardent on the rear. I think thats probably going to give me what I'm looking for.0 -
It might but I would use a 2.35 minion on the front and a 2.35 high roller on the rear0

Ive just swapped 2 ignitors for the veritcal pros and have to disagree with that - the verticlal pro with black chili has better grip than ignitor, its also lighter and rolls faster.
The vertical pro with black chili is a limited edition tyre and I think it often gets confused with the standard version.0 -

It was the normal version I used but the 70a ignitor quite often gets confused with the 62a0 -
fair do's - it was the standard 70a that I replaced with the conti verticals0
