Going to change my gear cables and am wondering if I should go for Shimano XTR cables which seem to be well rated or if I should go for cheap Stainless steel inners with standard outers but use Cablemagic which is also well rated.
I don't mind lubeing my cables every now and then once fitted.

My current cables are giving me endless problems so I just want to make sure I go with the best option.

The best option is powercordz, the inners cost $35 though, so more expensive than XTR.

However you get unstretchable, zero maintainence kevlar cables.

The cable waterproofing kit from wiggle is good too.

it's an investment, but means you never have to adjust your cables again as no stretch
Why would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?
  • xtr inners but go for a full outer housing, sp41 i think it is?? pretty much the same as the xtr if not the same?? makes for lovely shifting all the time!!

Nokon cables everytime. Have tried others but these are just the best. Had 1 set for 4 years and counting on my Hard Tail MTB and it still shifts lightly. Have put a full lentgh one on my Epic at the rear as it kept eating cables (avid and goodridge). 1year and no worrys. Expensive but have already saved me money in the long run (actually go the 1st set for £10 off wiggle in a sale, wish I'd stocked up). My bikes are taken out in all weathers.

A bit expensive for me unfortunatley, The XTR set is about as much as I can pay.
If I went with the XTR cable set, is it best to fit as is or should I also lube / cablemagic them or would that be a waste / damage coating?

Just to update, went with XTR replacment set with no additional lubrication.
Shifts are silky smooth with no issues, very happy.

  • xtr (SP41) is pregreased so DO NOT lube before use. Maybe in 10 months when it has all come out.
