Constant clicking on left side of BB

It happens on my Ultegra chainset/BB combo, but not my RaceFace combo.

It's not the saddle or the pedal. I took the left crank off tonight, lubed it and sat on the turbo for 30 mins to test it. No clicking. So far - I expect it to start clicking during this week's commute.

Is this clicking caused by a knackered bearings in the left BB cup? There was a very small amount of play in the crank when you try to move it laterally, but I can't see why that would cause the clicking.

Grateful for some thoughts before I buy a new BB. Or a new bike :P .

Cheers.

add preload to get rid of the sideways play first. (should be none)

then check pedals.cleats. and then bearing cups.

CJ have you tried loosen off the bolts, I had the same issue on my 105 BB, took the whole lot out greased stuck it back, it was good for a few miles then the tick/click came back, in the end I loosed off the tension, noise gone.

Hmm. I tightened the bolts to reduce the play. Had to do it again this morning before I set off on the Surrey Rumble, although there was no clicking. I did wonder if it was the result of that plastic, black hook thing being in the wrong position. Will see how it runs this week.
