Nearly got taken out this morning.

Riding to work this morning about 4 miles down still in the countryside(ish) I noticed 2 deer hanging around by the side of a 40(ish!) mph stretch of road so I slowed expecting them to bolt any time, sure enough they ran across uin plenty of time for the car coming in the opposite direction. The unseen 3rd one wasn't so lucky.

A chap in an Alpha coming the other way hit the thing smack on at aboout 40mph no more than 10 feet away from me, the deer, a big fat adult male, hit the windscreen and vaulted almost directly over my head and landed in the road behind me twitching.

I nearly damn shat myself.

I would have been fine though I was wearing a helmet.

Don't want to think about what would have happened if the thing had landed on me

I'm getting the train home tonight.

The car was well and truly fcuked.

Unfortunately I failed to pick up the carcass, even more so that the accident happened no more than a mile away from my retired butcher dad's house

    It was ready tenderised too.

A mate was driving along the A9 in a van and the car in front hit a deer and it got vaulted over their van and landed in the windscreen of the car behind them killing the driver!
  • so ya didnt strap it across the cross bar then? cycle home and pick it up on the way back, hang it for a few days or so and sorted. poor thing though and lucky escape for you.

See if that deer had been wearing a helmet......

's the trouble with deer - no lights, no insurance, no road tax
  • You were lucky!

Taking the train tonight? But why? Surely that's your bad luck done for today...

You need a venison rack. I think they do a carbon version now so you'll still be lightweight whilst carrying 200kg of fresh deer.

As a bystander you are entitled to take the venison, and I for one would pay to see a cyclist load it all up and carry it home.

I was going to hang around but the driver said he saw me and the other 2 deer but not the other one, I legged it before he accused me of distracting him. I'm waiting for the dealy mail headline.

I'm thinking bad things come in 3's.

Monday night I on the same stretch of road I arrived at the schene of a head-on car crash just after it happened and before the cops, today I saw the accident happen, stands to reason tonight or tomorrow I'll be in the accident 8) thats my reasoning anyway, I've never been a fan of logic.

Plus i'm tired, first week back and all that.

Surely you`re having good luck seeing as how the deer missed you.
Being killed by a falling deer, now that would have been unlucky but you would have made the news, probably. "And finally"...

Might the driver need you to call the police to verify his story?

I was thinking that I didn't give any details to him at the time as it was only an animal involved, do you think they might need a witness? TBF he was calling the police as I left and neither the deer or the car were going anywhere soon. The road is dead straight but i've seen 2 deer and a fox hit there in the last 18 months. Other 2 I only saw the aftermath.

Don't think you have to inform the police of roadkill wildlife - they'd be inundated.
    Hello, which service?

    Police please

Hello, yes I've run over a rabbit............

The only thing he'd be calling for is if he's gonna cause a blockage for some time with his car wreck!

Well you've spelt BMW wrong
I think it's a myth that the person who strikes the deer cannot take the carcass. :?
Have a beer and count your lucky stars prawny, that must have been one hell of a shock
  • I remember a slightly surreal conversation while at a conference in the New Forest a couple of years back:

Conference organiser 1: I hit 3 deer last year on the AXXX
Conference organiser 2: That's why there's a 50 mph limit on that road
Conference organiser 1: Is there a speed limit there? I never noticed.
  • I nearly damn shat myself.

I would have been fine though I was wearing a helmet.

I laughed quite loudly at that bit - my helmet could also double as a gazunder...
