At the moment I have Ultegra 6700 STI levers fitted to my bike, but my Trek is a mixture of Dura Ace 7900 & Ultegra 6700, just thinking about upgrading the STI's to DA 7900..... My question is, would I feel any benefits upgrading or should I save the money & spend it on something else? :)

  • Sorry can't help on your question but how do you find the Ultegra levers, I was contemplating them and got my hands on a set and didn't like the feel of all the exposed parts especially when you hands are in the "pistol" grip.

I tend to use stuff until it wears out or the new stuff looks so good that I can't resist.
In either case I doubt you'll "feel" any difference. You'll still have to move your finger a half
inch or so to shift with either one.
  • don't bother IMO. I have DA on the BMC and it is a 'softer' change than the Ultegra on the PX SL. I think I prefer Ultegra :?

I like them a lot, the main difference from the previous generation is that the "nub" has become smaller and the reach to it longer. I have used 5600 105, 6600 Ultegra, 7800 Dura Ace and new 6700 Ultegra.

On balance I might even prefer 6700 Ultegra to 7800 Dura Ace.

Shift is at least as good, maybe a bit better despite the cable routing. Braking is much improved used with the new brakes, particularly from the hoods. Not that there was anything wrong with the old brakes, they are also excellent but this is even better.

The one downside is that if you brush the actual brake lever at all when moving the thumb paddle it will not shift, the lever just swings without doing anything. This is mostly an issue when wearing winter gloves. Not a biggie.

I haven't used 7900 DA but I would be surprised if there were much difference other than a bit of weight.
