Mechnically challenged numpty alert.....
I currently have a Campag equipped road bike, used for summer training, triathlon, time trials and I may get into some road racing if I think I'm fit enough. Thinking of getting a 50mm carbon wheelset.
However, at some point in the near future (probably next 12 months) I'd like to get a TT bike. Having looked around for Campag equipped time trial bikes or having one built up seems to be a bit of a pain (and expensive). So it may have to be a Shimano equipped TT bike (I'm not actually bothered over the Campag v Shimano thing).
Ideally I'd like the wheelset I buy to be used on both the Campag bike now, and a Shimano bike in the future. How can this be done? A guy in the LBS said this could be done, but I didn't understand the explanation fully
It maybe that I need to swap the wheels over reasonably regular.

You can get a conversion cassette that will fit a shimano hub body and campag gearing, and vice versa, but I couldn't find one for much less than £100.0

Thanks Pete, £100 is a lot less than 2 x £1,000 on two different wheelsets. Any ideas how easy it is to change over?0

I'm curious, in what way is it a pain?
I had a quick look at Ribble site (no particular preference) and without any phaffing found a veloce equipped, carbon TT bike for £1060.00. In this case, is that outside your budget?0 -

No not outside my budget at all, just very limited in what is available. Not sure if Ribble have offered a campag option for a while? There were very few suggestions for Campag TT bikes when I started a thread a couple of months back.

I think the main reason is the cost of just the bar end shifters in comparison to the Shimano/Sram alternatives.0 -
Actually just checked Ribble, by the look of the text it is a reasonably new optionThe most affordable 10spd groupset on the marker is now available in a TT version with Campagnolo 10 spd bar end levers and ITM low pro alloy brake levers
I see they also have a Centaur option which is exactly what I have at the mo on the other bike.0 -
I purchased an Ambrosio cassette to fit on a shimano hub for my campag centaur bike.
For me it was to use an old wheel for my turbo. It runs fine.
I suppose the only balls ache would be having to change the cassette everytime!!
But you can get them for around £40 as below

True, and whilst I've seen a cassette changed a few times, and it looks easy enough, I've never done it myself. Hence thehammerite wrote:Mechnically challenged numpty alert.....0 -
Fair enough, i'm a right spacko and i can manage it, just. Need the right lock ring remover. And maybe a chain whip but i used an old rag an old bit of chain and a lot of effort (and bleeding knuckles- maybe best to just buy the chain whip  8)
Loads of links on google

I have a chain whip, never used in anger though. (came in a box of other tools, the quality of it could be questionable!).0 -

Is there anybody who does cassettes for Campag freehubs, but with Shimano spacing on the cassette?
Ambrosio seems to do Campag-Campag, Shimano-Shimano and Shimano-Campag, but no Campag-Shimano :S0 -

Been doing a bit of looking around and have seen this, but think this Evolution http://www.byercycles.co.uk/10R0908.html but again I think this is Shimano to Campag.0 -
Hammerite,
I have just bought a set of PRO RC-50 carbon clinchers with a Shimano freehub and I run a campag equiped road bike. I am awaiting the delivery of my Ambrosio 12-25 cassette which is Shimano splined but Campag spaced. Afetr doing a bit of research it seems that KMC chains are the best to ensure that the gears align properly and remain quiet.
Once the weather gets better I'll post a ride report and let you know how I find the shifting etc, although reviews I have read seem to indicate it will be fine.
Cheers

@hammerite- it is very easy to change a cassette. With many wheels it is not a big deal to change the freehub body either (a spare freehub body may cost around £50) so that would be another option for you although slightly more work. You could use normal Shimano/Campagnolo cassettes in that case.0

Thanks Jesse & Blorg. All useful to know.0

Simple Answer.......use a Shimano cassette with a Campag groupset!
I do it all the time and have no problem at all (even use a SRAM chain to complete the set). I've got 3 sets of wheels (s 2 shimano freehub and 1 campag freehub) with 2 bikes (one Ultegra, one Centaur) and have never had to chop and change cassettes to get the things working. Common link seems to eb the SRAM chain though, not sure if these are dsigned to work with both.
Not sure why everyone else doesn't do it, I don't suppose I've hit on some magic formula for setting my gears up either!0
