Hello Everyone.
Ok i am new to this game but keen really looking to get into properly when the weather warms up.
Anyways my company are opening up the C2W scheme and i want to take advantage.
I recently started a new job which i have to cycle 6 miles roundtrip each week day. This isn't a tough route at all, its all country lanes (however super slippy in the recent weather!)
But since doing this cycling i really want to get into it and hopefully get into some moderate trails.
So i am looking for a bike that would be suitable for all the above around the £500-600 mark as need to buy cloths / accessories with the rest of the £1000 limit.
I visited one shop recently who recomended the Specialized Hardrock Pro Disc Bike 2010 / Trek 4500 Disc E. However i know NOTHING about bikes / manufactures so all your advice and comments is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Go to a decent bike shop and put your leg over a couple, its the best way. As Supersonic says, read some reviews as well and if anyone you know has a bike pinch a ride and see what you think. The proof is in the pudding and there are too many bikes to mention that may be suitable!
Avoid gong for something that looks really good but as soon as you ride it you realise it is dressed up pig! . You should expect cable disc brakes at least and an alright fork for £600. Look for an upgradeable frame if you see yourself in it for the long run but don't go mad for upgrades until bits fall apart from wear.
It's a decent amount to spend on a first bike so you could get quite a lot for your money, even more so if you buy 09 models as a shop around acould see some massive reductions0
