So - is it just the Dura Ace skewers that are safe to use then?

For instance - out of all the Pro teams riding today - do you think they all use this ONE design of skewer - or do some use the 'unsafe' design?

    Genuine question.

They probably just use the ones that come with the wheels.

The KCNC ones get good reports from weightweenies and seem like a good design to me. they won't last as long (read that as if you use the QR often the ball joint will wear out) as shimano or campag skewers, but they are over half the weight.

So here's my question. Do you really believe that you are gaining anything at all by having skewers that weigh half what DA and Record weigh??? How much faster do you go with these lighter ones??? Is it even measurable???? Anything to be gained??? More expense and a shorter life span(so you say). What's the attraction, other than bling and bragging rights, to these skewers??? Seriously???

    0.12 MPH

My calculations showed a .11 MPH gain, so we are both in the ball park. I did round up in a few cases though.

Have you ever noticed that good wheels don't seem to come with skewers? I've really only HEARD this as I don't actually own any good wheels.

Reason for using them wasn't really the lightness of them, though that was a consideration, but the fact they are small and a bit more aero than Shimano ones.

Not sure that they are more aero than Shimano unless you bought the Triathlon Specific labeled ones. The regular ones are sometimes confused with the Tri ones because they
look pretty much alike. However, the Tri set came with a big red sticker that said Tri Specific, a free aero water bottle, and they cost twice as much, so there shouldn't be any doubt as to which ones you have.

Lots harder it would seem.
  • I use these http://www.frmbike.biz/index.php?page=s ... &Itemid=26 and find they work well, simple, lightweight skewers and you get a colour choice

Alot smaller than Shimano ones  so less material in the wind, will it make much difference, I really doubt it, but they look a million times better than Shimano ones, so that will do for me. :D

I also know they are not going to come loose during a race, as they are tight enough. They are likely to break when doing them up, rather than during a ride IMO, so if they break when doing them up, I would replace with another skewer.

Yes you do... But they didn't come with QR's! Well, mine didn't

I really don't understand using anything but Shimano or Campag QRs they are just so much better than the rest. OK they maybe a bit heavier but who gives a f**k, I'd rather know my wheels won't fall off when I jump a pothole at 40+ mph. And anyway you can save more weight by just tipping 75ml of water out of your bottle, and you'll never notice not having those 75ml.

I have never used a Shimano or Campag skewer, the only internal cam skewer I have is my turbo skewer, and I have never had a skewer even come loose let alone allow the wheel to actually fall out.

EDIT : I do have Shimano on my CX bike, only had that a few months though.

I think the fear of a skewer failing is a lot higher than the actual likelyhood of it happening. If a skewer is fitted correctly the chances of it failing whilst on a ride I think is very slim.

+1...... I don't care what people buy. It's up to them. I guess, for myself, I can't see paying twice as much for something that is in NO way better than the industry standard. Pretty, however, is another story. Worth every penny if you have to have it.

Yip, they come loose. I've had a back whel come out. Currently using KCNC and they've been spot on.

Assume the fact thet they can come loose is the reason for lawer tabs on forks??

Me neither. Never bought aftermarket skewers...

Just used the ones with the wheels. In fact, my winter/training bike uses the Tacx Turbo one for the rear...

That said, if someone gave me some nice blingin' ones, I'd gladly use them as they look good.

  • Guys,

This thread is surreal, seeing beauty in a set of skewers raise some serious questions about your mental stability.

Being a geek is never been good or cool, it's also an unhealthy attitude. Go out more, get other interests...
Life goes beyond shopping on-line for useless components. Take up latin dancing, learn another language, read some decent literature and when the weather is decent get out on your bike too.
There is no beauty in skewers and this is a fact!

And what do I do when I've done all these things? Do I have your permission to obsess over my bike again?

There is no beauty in skewers and this is a fact!
No, good sir. That is NOT a fact. That.... is an opinion. And one which many people do not agree with. There is beauty in everything, if you look for it. Especially cool skewers. :)

    +1.

I may not have blingin' skewers but that's through laziness.
