Shimano DX Shoes-Help..

Just bought a pair of Shimano DX Shoes and am wanting to fit my Crankbrother Acid cleats to the bottom. I know I have to remove the rubber in the recess, but do I remove the square bit or the entire section in the recess that has an indented line shaped a bit like a cross.
Please help!
