Im looking to get a new bike, but also looking to shed some weight

Im curruntly 15 stone 11 and want to get down to somewhere near 14

I was around 18 just over 18 months ago and have toned up a lot. I have a big frame and just want to cut up and trim down a little, I eat well and dont drink or smoke, if only I could give up chocolate I think ill be sorted lol

I currently ride a trek 1.2 2009 and love riding it, but am looking to treat myself in the coming months with a newer bike with around £1.5k limit and most of them come with wheels with less spokes etc. Now i know it may be a myth about wheels etc but i like the fact my current bike is robust and can handle a biglad like myself.

I also want to do some time trials in the summer, and want a nice bike and my current bike to be a winter bike

Is it best I try lose the weight before buying a new bike to feel double the benefit, or will the new bike help me lose the weight??

Also would another option be to get some custom build wheels for my new bike. Also looking to do a bit of off roading to improve fitness

Andy, what bikes are you looking at for £1.5k? I'm sure if you talk to a decent LBS they can tell you if weight will be a problem but IMO a most bikes should be built to take a decent range of weights and 16st is not exceptional. Alternatively at that price point there are companies where you can spec the kit including wheels - check out Ribble or Planet X - I'm sure the latter has wheel options with more spokes for bigger riders.

As to what you do first, I say get the bike and join the silly commuter weight loss thread to add that competitive element to shedding the pounds :)

    Cheers,
    Steve.

the last one would mean I would have that for commuting and spend the extra bit on upgrading my 1.2 a little bit.

You can see a theme from the bikes I like, but Ive had so much pleasure out of my current bike dont see why I should change. Im going the LBS this week sometime and they are VERY helpful so will ask them a lot of questions. I did look at the ribble but I like to by from LBS so they can help me with fitting and service

I might just join that, Ive recently joined scs and im very addicted to that, so maybe the weightloss isnt a bad idea. I just cant wait for the weather to warm up so can get even more miles in, and I eat less in the summer and a lot more healthy, think we all do that anyway lol
