I'm about to purchase a Garmin Edge 705 and want to get European Road Maps for it, preferably on DVD, however I'm somewhat put off by the £65 price tag for Garmin City Navigator.

Given that it's not that important that I have the most up to date version as I'm unlikely to be riding on many newly built roads does anyone know anywhere I could buy older versions of City Navigator, or whatever preceeded it, that will still be compatible with the Edge 705.

Incidentally, the reason I want DVD version is because I believe this makes it easier to plan routes on your PC and upload them, rather than doing it directly on the Garmin

  • To be honest, I doubt most people plan routes using Gamin software or maps. I use map myride and just download a TCX into the unit. there are other websites too and everyone has their favourite.

If you can get one on micro SD just go for that

  • I've gone to http://www.opencyclemap.org and found maps and info to put on my wife's 705. Works well, we have GB roads and GB contours on the unit. this may not be as accurate as the city navigator dvd but it's doing us well at the moment.

You can use these maps with the free garmin software to plot routes.

I'm thinking about buying the city navigator dvd for our E to E trip next year, but only to make sure the route we chose is actually navigable. The open cycle maps may well be superior by then.

I use Mapsource (Garmin s/w) to plan rides on the PC and it works a hell of a lot better than Mapmyride. The fundamental problem with the latter (besides the annoying ads) is that the underlying Google maps are inaccurate. Get the DVD.
  • ive never found a problem with any of the mapmyride routes ive planned.

one of the other options is to get the micro sd and rename the map so mapsource thinks its the basemap. presto, you have detailed maps without the DVD.

instructions are flying round online for this and it worked fine for me.
