I know Ambrosio do a cassette that is spaced for Campagnolo but will fit a shimano splined freehub, does anyone know what the quality of the cassette is like?

Do you have one and if so how do you find it?

Also are there any other cassette available that will do this?

I am looking to buy a set of deep section clinchers and have been offered a great deal on a pair of PRO RC-50's but as PRO are a subsidiary of Shimano they only come in Shimano fitment.

Thanks

Jesse

  • I've used one of these on a Powertap hub and put it on different peopel's bikes for reseach purposes. All were using 10speed record and there were no problems - we never had to adjust the rear mech and nobody complained about the quality of the change.

I don't know how long lasting these cassettes are though,

You can also buy Marchisio cassettes (expensive) and I believe sprocket spaces will convert shimano to campag or vice versa.

Never used them but these Evolution cassettes are certainly quite cheap. Might not be the sort of ratio you want though.

wow 12-28  it'd be like having a chainring on the rear wheel

Thanks for the ideas so far guys, I think the Marchisio cassettes are a little pricey and the ratio on the evolution one is to much, I am looking for a 12-23 or similar as the wheels will be mainly used for crits and rolling training rides, I'll save the Racing 1's for any hilly rides.

FWIW a Shimano freehub is 35mm whereas a Campagnolo is 38mm - the largest sprocket on Shimano cassette is 'dished' to compensate - you may have trouble squeezing a Campagnolo cassette onto the freehub and getting the lockring to engage. Some people swear that you can run a Shimano 10 cassette on a Campagnolo drivetrain - not tried it myself, but feedback ranges from acceptable to rough - I'd try it yourself before investing in parts that might not fit.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Useful bit of info, cheers montydog.

Slightly concerned as I don't have the wheels yet so cannot try before I buy so to speak, so i need to decide whether to just buy the wheels and hope the conversion cassette fits, if not then it looks like I am selling my campag groupset and buying Ultegra 2010.

i'd love to know how these people fitted a shimano cassette on a campag hub as the spline pattern is completely different and the lockrings are a different diameter?????

FWIW ive used an ambrosio shimano splined- campag spaced cassette with no problems at all= the cassette wears well and is probably veloce equivalent in weight mines a 12-25

I presume he means they used a wheel with a Shimano freehub and a standard Shimano cassette on an bike with an otherwise Campagnolo drive train. A friend of mine has used a 10 speed Shimano cassette with 10 speed Record and he says it works fine. May depend on how much of a stickler you are for perfect shifting, what you will put up with in a pinch may not equate with what you would set out to do buying new.
  • I read somewhere that the top and bottom sprockets index due to the gear stops, so (eg on a 9 speed) if the centre sprocket is dead on, there will only be 0.6mm of difference at the most on the other sprockets - which may well be taken up by the moving top sprocket on the rear gear.

Use a Jtek Shiftmate to use a Campag shifter and mech with a Shimano cassette.

That is the sort of thing I would consider if I had all the stuff already and had to make it work... not sure I would be so keen to buy from scratch.
