Upgrade from 9sp to 10sp on a budget

I’ve been asked by my chancellor (AKA Mrs. Mozza) to submit finacial requirements for upgrading my 9sp 6500 Ultegra to 10sp 6700 Ultegra. This will need to be approved by the Home Audit Commisssion (AKA Mrs. Mozza) before approval can be sort. I need to do this exercise as cheaply as possible. This is where I need help from the Bike Upgrade Committee ( i.e. YOU).
Some questions for the Committee:
1. Will I notice a real difference in performance from 6500 to 6700 apart from the extra sprocket?.....Like shifting quality for instance….& weight.
2. What’s the minimum component change I need to keep cost down whilst still enjoying full compatibility?.......front shifting & braking?
3. Or should I wait until 11sp 6800 Ultegra which will address some of the issues with 6700?

Mozza’s documentation has to be presented in the next 10 working days for funding in this fiscal year………& in time for the spring. :P

I`m interested in the chainset, when will it be available and how much, please?

  • Least parts - shifters, cassette, chain.

6700 has cables running under the bar tape, so neatens it up a bit, but does make the shifts a bit heavier (I`ve got 6600 and 6700 on different bikes, and the 6600 is a lighter shift) 6700 is supposed to be used with the new 6700 brakes calipers, due to "changed pivot points" and other such mallarkey. I`ve run it with 105 calipers and it works fine for me. Same with 6700 front mech. shifter and earlier chainsets, no probs there.

6700 lever set from Merlin is £200 at the mo. :)

If you're not married to the idea of getting 6700 shifters you might want to look at getting some 6600's still available and going for cheap. I think Evans still have the SL versions at the lowest price I've seen. As mentioned by JohnnyAllez, all you need are, chain, cassette, and shifters. The 9sp crankset works great with a 10sp chain.

    Is a 10 speed crankset OK with a 9 speed set-up?

    JohnnyAllez,
I`ve got 6600 and 6700 on different bikes, and the 6600 is a lighter shift
How does the shift compare to 6500?
  • Dunno, never used 6500, but I`d think similar to 6600 with the routing of the cables, 6700 is definitely heavier, but still usuable, not likley to over-stress you thumbs or anything

Antfly, 8, 9 or 10 speed chainsets all work with 10 speed chain etc. it`s only the chain widths that differ (to get more sprockets on the cassette in the same space), pitch etc is the same.

Ribble have just dropped their prices....
    6600 levers £164 with cables
    6700 levers £206 with cables
Ultegra SL for £162 with cables.

Don`t the 10 speed chainsets have thinnner teeth to take the thinner chain?

Both the 6600 & 6700 have a shorter lever throw than the 6500 and different hood shapes which some like/dislike/don't care.

No, it seem that they`ve thinned down the chain sideplates to get less chain width, 9 and 10 speed are fully compatable.

Can you use a 9sp derailleur with 10sp shifters then? And vice versa?

Yes, just adjust the end stop H and L screws to suit.

    1. tell her what she needs to hear - is she going to check?
    2. you NEED the whole groupset! i think Merlin are doing it for £500 at the moment. Reason. they are mechanical components and therefore they wear out with use. you old ultegra 9 speed is on the end of its life. it you only replace bits of it, the other parts will wear out soon and it will end up costing more to replace bit by bit! also the pins in your RD are getting sloppy now so you won't get the full effect of the new shifters with the old RD.
    3. oh. sorry. i misunderstood your post. i thought you were wanting to get an upgrade for your bike now. :)
