Hi
Thanks for reading

I want to upgrade the wheels on my Cannondale Super Six and would apprectiate advice.

I will be doing Sportives and training on the new wheels

I would also like them to look good

I am 6 feet 7 and 108kg with peak power of 1700 watts.

My current thoughts are

Dura Ace 50mm

Zipp 404

Reynolds Assaults

Cosmic Carbone SLR
What do you think - What have I missed

Thanks
Steve

I hear the Fulcrums are pretty bulletproof for the heavier stronger rider!

You state uses as sportives and training, then list top of the range race wheels...
At your size and power, maybe handbuilts....
Or, maybe... the 'search' button.

At the OP's size and weight, it's got to be something with a high spoke count?
  • At 108kg the Dura Ace C50 tubulars (WH-7850-C50-TU) would be my pick by some distance. Or Zipp 404 Clydesdale tubulars (2009 or later for the deeper rear hub flange). Zipp clinchers are not very stiff, about three people I know who've had Assaults have had trouble with them not to mention the inherently less sound construction of carbon clinchers. Stopping 108kg going down a hil is going to put them under considerable stress. Some of the deeper tubular Reynolds might be a better choice in their range. Carbone SLRs are overpriced and less durable and less aero than the other options you mention.

I've ridden C50-TU, Mavic CCUs, Bora Ultra 2s, Hyperon tubulars, Zipps (clincher and tub) and a bunch more alloy wheels - Ksyrium SL, Racing 1, Shamal Ultra, Neutron Ultra, OP/240S, etc.

I'm 100kg, produce similar peak power and do most of my sprint training on the road.

I've now got 2 sets of hand built wheels for strength, as little flex as possible, reliability and longevity.

And my latest set of Dura Ace hub/DT Swiss RR1.2 rims look pretty good too IMHO. There’s a pic here.
    I’m a sprinter – I warmed up yesterday.
  • Yes - I was going to suggest RR1.2s and DT 240s hubs - the 7800/7900 hubs will be equally good and look good too.
  • Good looking strong wheel for training and sportives I'd go for a Fulcrum Racing 1 for that sort of money.

I'm guessing though that you're in love with deep carbon rims, so I'm also going to suggest the Dure Ace 50's with Alu brake tracks. Yes they weigh more but if you're not racing I wouldn't ride a carbon brake surface and I've always loved the Dura Ace wheels for their looks.

Cosmics are lovely as are Fulcrum recing one and zero. There were some Bora's going at a reasonable price on flea bay.
  • 1700 watts. shit a brick . you could power a small village. cant comment on technical side but the DAs' look nice.

At the OP's size and weight, I certainly wouldn't be being cheeky and telling him to use the search function!

I'm not a fan of endorsing the search everytime. It's useful sometimes for someone to start a thread that perhaps i wouldn't have gone looking for myself, that's how I learn from this and other sites.

Obviously the search is useful and I use it all the time, well actually I search the BikeRadar site from Google, but you know what I mean :)
  • i had a similar problem and being 110+kg i was told to not bother with carbon wheels. got fulcrum racing zero instead and the have been amazing

    Very nice wheels 8)

What was the cost and weight?

Thanks! I'm afraid that I didn't weigh them as that wasn't an importatnt issue for me. They're not the lightest things in the world as the DT rims are quite robust but that was part of the reason I went for them. Cost from Hewitt Cycles in this F24/R28 spoke count was £494.

  • Thanks to all for their replies so far.

I did not take offence at the "search "option as I did not understand it!!
    Could someone explain please.

As an ex rugby player who is having a rest year from ergoing(concept 2 rower) I am excited by the bike.
I have been mountain biking for 30 years (Muddy Fox) but am new to road bikes.
I realise I will never be competitive on the road but I need to be as competitive as I can!
Best 53 year old,6 -6,108kg rider over....... etc.

I believe the best upgrade I can make is to get better wheels(have Kysirium SLs) at present but really wanted 50 ish deep carbon but it would appear that I need to start looking at standard rims that you have so helpfully suggested.
    Pity I love bling!!

Will now start looking at the options you have suggested.

My LBS suggest that I should also change my Dura Ace to the new 7900 as I will see a big improvement??

    Thanks for now

    Please keep the suggestions comeing

If you want 50mm rims but are a heavier rider then don't despair, have a word with everyones friend, Derek at http://www.wheelsmith.co.uk/index.htm He should be able to put the right spokes and lacing with the Gigantex rims to give you a set.
