Looking to go camping in Wales this summer. The closest trail centre for me is Cwmcarn. Im looking for a nice campsite within 20 miles ish of the centre. I'll be going with my to-be heavily pregnant missus and 2 year old daughter so dont really want to be anywhere too rough. Really want somewhere with a quiet local pub and nice surroundings on the campsite for evening bbqs and beers.

Thanks in advance.

  • Ok yes there is camping at the site.

but afan has more trails, also does camping and is actually a good 40/45 minutes further into Wales. i would say both sets of camping at the trail cetners is basic but adequate.

I'm off to Afan for the easter weekend...I'm staying at a working farm....'Sh1t in a pit' camping they call it, but it has other land where it has the facilities closer to the site too. For 3 quid a night per person you can't argue and it's had REALLY good reviews too.

I scoured everywhere in wales to find the best place for me and 3 lads to go, for the activities we wanted (mainly biking, of course!!!!) and Afan came up trumps!
  • Camping with a pregnant partner! You need to give this some thought.

Cwm Carn campsite is small and sparse. It’s squashed into the bottom of the valley very close to the gravel car park and as you know there aint much there. Apart from the centre this is not a tourist area and the local pubs and facilities are typical welsh valley industrial working class. Nothing wrong with that, It’s where I’m from but I wouldn’t want to take a pregnant partner there for a short brake.

Afan isn’t much better and the camping field is very sloping. A pregnant woman could roll out of her sleeping bag and just keep on rolling.

Don’t get me wrong. Both sites are ideal for a bunch of hardy bikers to use as a base.

If I were you Id go inland to the Brecon beacons area equidistant from both centres. The Riverside International camping site is such a place with a drive time of about 45 mins to both centres. It has a pool, bar and facilities more suitable for your partner and a couple of villages nearby.

Be warned! If you take ur family camping to these centres especially this time of year in her condition, you will never be allowed to forget it...

My vote as a family man goes to Pencilli Castle http://www.pencelli-castle.com/ which is right in the Brecon Beacons.

reindeer & rabbits & playground for the little 'un.
    clean facilities, shop, pub opposite.
You're right on the Taff trail - climb (walk) up the big Fans right from the entrance (12 mile circular). There's loads of proper XC biking in the region

    1 hour from Cwmcarn
    50 mins to afan
