Chainring sizes for Campag record chainsets

I have a 10 speed square taper Campag Record chainset with 52/42 chainrings & am struggling with the 42 ring, even with a 13-26 cassette (I live in South Wales). What is the smallest inner-ring I can fit to this chainset? I have a spare 39 tooth ring but can I go lower? Am considering a compact but would prefer to avoid the expense.

39 is the smallest that will fit, I'm afraid.
  • If you go lower you are heading for compact territory and a new front mech as well. Can you go bigger on the casette? You can go up to 28 on a Veloce casette This will depend on your rear mech -ok if it is a long or medium cage. New chainsets sometimes mean new bottom brackets because of the change in axel length required and as said before new front mechs.

I would say cheapest option is new casette (up to 28) and put the 39 on - assuming you have medium or long cage rear mech.

If that is still not enough keep the same cassette but change to either a compact (34/50) or a triple - trying to find one that corresponds to the axle length of your existing BB.

New campag chainrings are expensive on their own and sometimes a whole new chainset works out cheaper. Good luck!

Normal double front mech is fine with a compact.

  • In which case I was stiffed for an unnecessary front mech change - will bear in mind for future.
