What custom colour would you choose?

I've got my first steel bike being built up and I thought I had decided on the colour I wanted which was the black/blue option below. I then came across Serotta's website, realised that they have a nifty tool to trial various colour schemes and got cracking. (And no I'm not getting a Serotta, way to expensive).

The bike would be specced with a 11sp Chorus set, black Neutron ultra wheels, black bars/seatpost, white bar tape and blue/white Fizik Antares saddle. This was the reason I was going to go with the black blue colour scheme.

However ,something abou the sky blue version seems particularly appealing.

1/ I have narrowed it down to 3 options and would appreciate your views (assuming you like blue). So, which would you choose?

2/ Also, what coloured headset would you choose if you picked a Chris King?

  • Very nice. Black and blue are equally nice, but if the blue I'd go for option 2, but with the fork decal from option 3.

Headsets... probably black on the black frame, or maybe silverish to match the seatpin collar (same as belts and shoes  ). Defintely a matching silverish on the blue frame.

1st option and the blue CK headset would look just great.
  • Why don't you just trust your own taste?
Do you need the forum approval?

Anyway... you can't go wrong with a black bike... black is the new black... I also like a dark shade of red, what the Americans call Maroon.
The light blue option doesn't meet my taste.

Chris King? Are you mad? 100+ quid for a headset? Get a Campagnolo one. Plus, these fancy coloured headsets look a bit gay to me

Oh yeah but the colour won't match ugo, come on now ......
  • Well, as cyclists we master the art of mixing horrible colours togehter.

The rule is that you should match opposite colours in the colour circle... hence no crappy blue with other shades of blue.

Do you ever listen to your girlfriends? They know how to match colours, we don't... we should shut up and do as they say.

Also, a blue saddle? What did he have in mind that day?

yeah but as a designer I add colours to complement my existing palette, usually find that girls don't have too much of a clue.

My saddle's blue and lovely it is too
  • Why not Merckx orange?

    With the blue logo, superb!

  • Thanks for all your replies guys.

It looks like stealth black is in the lead.

Giant mancp, the parlee and IF examples were my original inspirations (well without the stars on the IF).

    ugo.santalucia, you crack me up.

I do trust my own taste up to a point. Do I need forum approval? Well, not quite. It's more to seek alternative view points. There are lots of things that look gay but I never thought a coloured headset might have been a possible candidate for gayness?

I did trry to ask my wife but she has no colour sense. It all looks the same in her eyes. Though, I suspect. it's mostly a 'Oh god, not the the bike conversation again?'

I have the Serotta in the colourway above (carbon black/true blue) and it looks superb although my white gold/blue tint carbon one looks super in the sun. Headset? Chris King. Genuine fit and forget. See if you can purchase from the US as they are/were cheaper. The blue looks ok but black goes with the bike and if you can afford it the Ti one looks good. If you are using Shimano, why not go for a matching C.King set of outboard bearing cups?

I would go for the Independent Fabrication Candy Absinthe. Saw one in Mosquito Bikes and it was the best I've seen (well, after my own Candy Orange IF that is).

Trying to find a good piccy of it on t'internet

Not the best photos but gives you an idea.

Forget about all this blue and black stuff!!

If you've got the option of a custom paintjob, why not push the boat out a bit? I had a couple of steel frames painted last year. I had intended on going for fairly normal colours, but in the end got one in orange, the other in a duck egg blue with ivory panels. I'm biased, but I have to say they really stand out from the crowd.

What colour kit are you going to wear with it ? No point in taking too much time thinking about the bike if you are wearing some hideous hat, jersey, shorts, shoes combination.
  • Cougie,
    Good point.
Perhaps, not surprisingly my kit consists of only black and blue colours- Mostly black though.
