Hi all,

I have a birthday coming up soon and was thinking of getting some new wheels for my Scott CR1 Pro. I've had the bike just over 2 years and currently using the original Mavic Ksyrium Elite's. Whilst they're very nice I thought I'd get something nicer, and then keep the Mavic's for training. Within reason there is no budget limit, but i don't want to spend more than I need to. Oh, and they'll be a Shimano fit.

I tend to use 700/23 Vittoria Rubino Pros's.

cheers in advance

  • It all depends on what you are going to do, ie; just ride for fun and fitness, race or time trial ?
I've just got a set of ambrossia excellight rims built up on pmp hubs with aci spokes, built for training and doing the paris roubaix, they are stunning, bomb proof and only 200 grams heavier than my fulcrum racing 3's, which i use for racing and sportives. cost £400. bargain.

see the link below for derek @ wheelsmith,
he will build you a cracking set of wheels

    hope this helps :D

Not entirely sure long term...was thinking about trying some racing next year if family life allows. For now it'll be Sportives and general riding, with the odd trip to the Alps. i just fancied something to give me a bit more speed and if I'm honest, just a bit more bling. I had thought of Fulcrums but don't really know much about them.

And your racing 3's seem to get good reviews.
  • I've used Fulcrum Racing 3's for the last year for training / racing and they're highly recommended - currently on offer at Merlins for only £299.95 !!

  • Have you spoke to a wheel builder? I can highl;y recommend getting some hand builts, have posted before about my hand built wheels. Plenty of builders out there who I'm sure can build you a set with 'bling'! I had thought about going for these wheels in white, chickened out in end and got black...

Only just started thinking about it so no, haven't spoken to any builders as yet.
  • I would second grim3ur's post. I am back to cycling after a few years off and have ksyrium elite's (not current model) on my bike. yes they are nice, but on my old (now winter bike) I have mavic open 4cd rims on hope titanium hubs with double butted s/s spokes built by a good wheel builder. I just know these wheels will still be spinning long after the mavics are in the spare parts bin. if you're getting a set built check out the new chris king swift road hubs - saw a preview of them in cycling weekly a couple of months ago and they seemed to be impressed with them.

+1 for the F3's, though they're not really a step up from Ksyrium Elites. You'd need to look at something like the F1's or indeed try for something with a deeper rim, then the wheels you have at the moment would be best for sportives and long rides, while the deep section wheels e.g. American Classic 420's would suit racing more.

So I've decided to get some built and apart from wanting them in black and to fit Shimano 10sp, and to be lighter than my current Ksyrium Equipe's (originally thought they were Elite's), I'm really open to options.

I have also just contacted Wheelsmith.co.uk to see what they can come up with.
