Curious Front Derailleur Shananigans

chain snapped on friday, no problem, removed the knackered link and fitted a power link.
champion.
re-fitted the chain to find that the front derailleur cage was way out of line, i.e. the chain was rubbing (badly) on the cage.
what i dont understand is why the front derailleur is now in need of adjustment, it was fine prior to the chain snapping (it actually needs tightening).
surely the chain has no impact on the tension of the cage?
or am i being daft
