Child Seats for MTB

Hello All
Can anybody give me some advice on child seats and how old the child needs to be??
Both myself and my partner have Specialized Hardrock sports and i am in the process of buying either a Lapierre spicy or Cube AMS thats another debate...! The seat would more than likely be mounted on the Hardrocks, although if i am out on my own would any seats fit to a full suspension bike? At first it i would be out cycling roads and smooth cycle paths as the child is only 4 months old, so am i jumping the gun a little and wanting my little man on a bike
if anyone could help me out i would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

generally, as a rule of thumb, for smooth stuff, they need to be able to support their head with a helmet on.0

Agree - and as said, that'd be on smooth stuff.

Rear-mounted child seats suck on SO many levels.Commute - MASI Souville3 | Road/CX - MASI Speciale CX | Family - 80s ugly | Utility - Cargobike0 -
I totally recommend a Co-Pilot http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Co-Pi ... 000000058/
Both my wife and I have them so we can take our 2 children out
It comes with a proper Blackburn rack and the seat clips onto it. So if you want to whizz out for a ride on your bike minus children you just unclip the seat. The rack takes all the weight of the child and makes the bike feel more stable than the floating arm type seats. If you bought an extra Blackburn rack (so you had one on both bikes) you could switch the seat over between bikes.
The Co-Pilot also reclines. Both my two fall asleep, even on rocky bridleways and tracks! However I would say 18 months really for going in the seat. Before that age they really need to go in a trailer.Blogging about junior road bikes http://junior-road-bikes.tumblr.com0 -

Err... can you use that on a full-suspension bike? I thought it used a rear rack?Commute - MASI Souville3 | Road/CX - MASI Speciale CX | Family - 80s ugly | Utility - Cargobike0 -

It does, though didn't she say she would be using it on the Hardrock? Nothing out there for a full-sus really. I did see some Dads out doing a pretty serious offroad hack the other day each pulling a Chariot Cougar trailer. They looked a pretty serious bit of kit!Blogging about junior road bikes http://junior-road-bikes.tumblr.com0 -

And for full suspension, there's a link above. I also recently got a BoBike mini. (But think the above one would be better).Commute - MASI Souville3 | Road/CX - MASI Speciale CX | Family - 80s ugly | Utility - Cargobike0
