...but then what? How long do such schemes remain 'voluntary'? Why have publicly displayed pledge cards? Display them or else be regarded as an environmental miscreant? How would compliance with the pledges be monitored? Once this begins, where does it end?

Drive 5 miles less per day and save the planet.
Tell you what, turn off all the street lamps in all the unpopulated towns and cities? Turn off all the lights on 100's of miles of unused motorways, turn off all the lights in unattended offices and shops. That way you could save 2 planets!!! Me I'll carry on as i am I never have or will subscribe to the theory of MMGW.

What, even if there is a load more evidence of such high quality that even previously sceptical scientists change their minds? (I'm not trying to start another GW argument here, I'm just asking about this hypothetical scenario - if the opposite happened, I'd change my mind).

I agree with the rest of what you say though. Also make sure that lights are illuminating the STREETS and not the sky above major cities.

There are unnerving undertones of having a picture of the Leader prominently displayed to proclaim your committment to The Cause... ...and it helps to identify those dissendents who won't display their sticker...
