Hiya Guys,

Well then i have decided that i want a road bike instead of hybrid after the advise from some of you.

Looking at a Budget of £700 - £800 what would people suggest.

Its my first road bike, ideally looking for 27 gears 3 x front 9 x back, Good gear system, Wheels, a good all round bike for a newbie.

Sorry guys i am still trying to learn all the terminology etc

To my knowledge, budgets are made of some elastic material. If you stretch yours a bit, the following one fits just in:

For choosing the right size, just give them a call.

There may also be some other bikes of as good value but I just don't know of them :D
Maybe some Boardman or Cannnondale Caad9 come close.
  • Well judging by your other posts you may need a 56 or 58 frame, but as said before it varies between different people quite a lot. Unless you have friends bikes you can try, in order top get a 'feel' for it, then your best bet with a 1st bike is probably to go to the local bike shop and talk to them. There are no really bad bikes at that price point and you should be able to test ride in shops and also ask them about any queries plus you might find there knowledge for future maintenance or advice invaluable(personally i'm not a fan of many LBS's round my way). Then if your not sure you can return and ask the forumites again.

Personally (and most would probably never recommend this) I would take a punt on a second hand 58cm framed road bike with much nbetter spec than could be had new, you could chan ge certain bits like stem etc to try and get it as you like it but if no joy sdell it on and try again at little to no loss (maybe even profit if your lucky  )

Maybe it's just me but everytime I look at hte Plant-X site it's not clear what the prices are. I hear about these sub-£1000 bikes but if you use their bike configurator thing the VAT is always extra. That is unless the offer bike have it included and hte bike configurators don't, in which case it's just bad presentation on their website.

Does the bike linked to above actualy cost £899? or is VAT on top of that?

The price seems to include VAT. I guess that the biggest source of confusion is that, in the past, the advertised price did not include the assembly of the bike (100 pounds). Now it does.

Friend of mine has just got the ultegra one, £999 inc vat (but no pedals are extra! Why is that?)
I've got one as well and really rate the frame.

But if you've got the nouse or have a mate who does the second hand market can yield some steals
